00:00 The US government has been toiling over its budget for weeks now, with Republicans and
00:05 Democrats unable to reach an agreement.
00:07 Well that will all come to a head soon, as officials have now begun to warn federal employees
00:11 that a government shutdown is likely incoming.
00:14 The deadline to reach an agreement comes within the next 48 hours, and they are currently
00:18 planning late night votes tonight.
00:20 Those meant to ensure funding for homeland security, agriculture, and state foreign operations.
00:26 The Reuters reports even if those appropriations go through, that would not prevent a partial
00:30 shutdown, at which time all non-essential government work would be suspended, and the
00:35 employees would be furloughed.
00:36 However the Biden administration recently said a partial government shutdown would still
00:40 have catastrophic effects, as it would interrupt around 2,000 long-term disaster recovery projects.
00:46 It could also affect the income of around 2 million military personnel.
00:50 The last shutdown of this kind occurred under the Trump administration, related to his border
00:54 wall initiative.
00:56 It lasted from December 2018 until the end of January 2019.
01:00 If an agreement cannot be made by Saturday night, this will be the 22nd government shutdown
01:05 in our nation's history.
