Building Blocks Day Centre founder Lee Nicholson explains how the community hub will help to tackle the digital divide.
Transcript
00:00 Okay, then Lee, just tell me what the Digital Divide initiative is all about then?
00:06 It's about making everybody having the access to the internet and being digitally inclusive.
00:16 And what sort of things are you going to be getting installed at your hub here then?
00:20 So we are having our Wi-Fi and broadband upgraded, so it's going to be fully accessible in all of our buildings.
00:28 And so we can access it on your mobile cables. We've had the new CAT6 cable installed,
00:36 so it can hold hundreds of access points if we need to.
00:44 We are also upgrading all of our laptops on site, so we're going to have 10 laptops available to start with,
00:52 and a desktop and a few other things that will be available.
00:56 As part of the funding, we are going to set up a digital eSports hub as well.
01:04 So we are getting three full gaming systems, and we're hoping to run eSports gaming sessions from here,
01:17 where people can come together and access the internet and play games with their friends, all in a nice, safe environment.
01:28 How big an issue is Digital Divertment in terms of people who have got access and people who haven't?
01:33 It's massive. Massive.
01:35 We find that the older generation in particular struggle with the digital side of their life at the moment.
01:47 We're hearing more and more that they're struggling to pay bills and they're struggling to access even the bank,
01:56 just because they don't know the way around it, the computer enough.
02:01 So we plan on doing some sessions to try and alleviate that as well,
02:08 to help elderly people access their own funds and access more services as well.
02:15 What sort of things will people, maybe who don't have computers at home, don't have dint at home,
02:19 what sort of practical things will they use these computers for?
02:22 A lot of jobs now, a lot of jobs online, online interviews and stuff like that.
02:30 We are going to be access, when we're open, if you have an interview, you can come here and get it done on the laptops here,
02:39 it's totally free of charge. It will help in banking, it will help in job applications.
02:53 We're right in the middle of a bus station so we'll be easily accessible as well.
02:58 We're hoping that people will use this opportunity to try and better themselves and gain jobs
03:10 and gain a better understanding of how computers work and how to use them and stuff like that.
