00:00 Who's that creep hanging up there in the rafters?
00:16 Everybody knows his name, it's STING!
00:21 The icon, the franchise, the birthday clown from a My Chemical Romance video, Sting was
00:27 the painted white face of WCW during its ratings war winning peak in the 1990s and in late
00:33 2020 made his triumphant return to TNT when he joined the roster of AEW.
00:40 Sting's is a career that stands in defiance of the blob that ate everyone, aka the wannabe
00:47 wrestling monopoly known as WWE.
00:49 Philante was there to fight for the fans from within.
00:54 I mean, fat lot of good it did him, Sting's first ever well deserved WrestleMania match
00:58 being a sort of ceremonial burial of the old WCW brand by Trips and DX.
01:03 And now almost five years after his retirement, Sting resurfaces in AEW, the first real competition
01:09 that WWE has had since 2001, on a show that feels like a spiritual successor to WCW and
01:16 its replacement on TNT.
01:18 With Sting, the former face of wrestling on TNT, siding with his half son, half face painted
01:24 Darby Allin, the current TNT champion.
01:27 This old crow is now once again a figure of justice, watching over Darby, keeping things
01:33 fair against Team Taz.
01:35 It feels very Batman Beyond with the ageing Bruce Wayne training up the young Terry McGuiness,
01:41 finally handing over the cape and cowl and all the power to someone who needs it more.
01:47 But it's also a repeat of the myth, Sting is once again protecting TNT from an invading
01:53 force, in this case Taz and his FTW crew, and all the while using his status as an icon
01:59 and a franchise to help AEW rout NXT on a weekly basis.
02:04 Had Sting not been injured at Night of Champions in 2015 this story might look a little different,
02:09 as had he continued his career in WWE 1) we might have seen him win something and 2) it
02:15 might have changed his perception that he was always the face of the alternative.
02:20 But throughout his career Sting has intentionally or not kept watch over the alternative of
02:27 WWE, whether as the face of WCW, the centrepiece of TNA or now as the hot new 60 year old signing
02:35 of AEW, he stood up to authority and even when he wasn't talking was portrayed as
02:42 a voice for the voiceless.
02:44 Like any good vigilante does, he's proved time and again that the authority figures
02:49 don't know what they're really doing, especially when it comes to the booking, so
02:53 here's hoping that AEW finally give an icon a run worth idolising.
