Piles of rubbish like ‘Mount Everest’ say locals in East London amid strikes

Market stall holders have labelled rubbish piles in East London as ‘Mount Everest’ as strikes are set to continue for another four weeks.
The council have said they are “disappointed” by the strikes and that clean streets are their priority.

More than 200 Tower Hamlets council workers downed tools on September 18th after rejecting

the National Local Government pay offer of a flat increase of £1,925.

On September 20th, Union Unite's regional officer Nick West told London World the union

had gone to the council with two solutions as well as more localised offers to try and

end the strike but that they were batted away.

Local resident Mr Hussain said that Whitechapel is now a very nice place and with so many

people working here he wants to see the area clean and tidy.

He said that he has definitely been affected personally and wants to see the issue resolved

Other market stall workers we spoke to wished not to be named, however some had different

views when it came to the strikes.

While one thought it was the workers fault, others believed those on strike should be

rewarded with better pay.

A Tower Hamlets council spokesperson previously commented on the action and said the council

were disappointed by the strike as keeping Tower Hamlets streets clean and litter free
