00:00 In the US, a former leader of the right-wing Proud Boys group Enrique Tarrio was sentenced
00:06 to 22 years in prison.
00:08 The harsh sentence was levied for his role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
00:15 As per reports, it is the longest sentence so far in the case.
00:18 US District Judge Timothy Kelly imposed the sentence on the 39-year-old, belonging to
00:24 Miami, for his role in the riot by then-President Donald Trump supporters.
00:29 His lawyers said that he would appeal.
00:31 Tarrio had been convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in planning the Capitol riot
00:36 that sought to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's defeat of Trump in an
00:41 election that Trump falsely claimed was tainted by widespread fraud.
00:46 Tarrio's lawyers said that his absence from Washington on January 6, the result of another
00:51 judge's earlier order, meant that he had no direct influence on the riot.
00:56 But in imposing the sentence, the judge said, "Mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader of that
01:01 conspiracy.
01:02 Mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader, the ultimate person who organized, who was motivated by
01:07 revolutionary zeal."
01:10 Prosecutors said that Tarrio had remained in touch with the Proud Boys group and monitored
01:15 their actions.
01:17 Prosecutors had asked Kelly to sentence Tarrio to 33 years behind bars, saying that he helped
01:22 direct the attack from Baltimore.
01:23 His attorneys had asked for no more than 15 years.
01:27 Last week, Kelly sentenced another far-right Proud Boys leader, Ethan Nordean, to 18 years
01:32 in prison.
01:33 Oath Keepers militia founder Stuart Rhodes' inmate was also sentenced to 18 years.
01:40 In court on Tuesday, Tarrio said that he was sorry for his actions.
01:43 He said in a yegant quote, "I am extremely ashamed and disappointed.
01:48 What happened on January 6 was a national embarrassment."
01:52 More than 1,100 people have been arrested on charges related to the Capitol assault.
01:56 At least 630 have pleaded guilty and at least 110 have been convicted at trial.
02:01 Five people, including a police officer, died during or shortly after the riot, and more
02:06 than 140 police officers were injured.
02:09 Damage to the Capitol was in the millions of dollars.
02:12 Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was tapped to investigate broader efforts to overturn
02:17 the 2020 election, has charged Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential
02:22 nomination, for trying to keep himself in power.
