Iran launches missiles equipped with banned cluster munitions into heavily populated Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and areas near Jerusalem. According to the Israel Defense Forces, cluster sub-munitions scattered explosives over civilian zones, raising fears of mass casualties and prompting urgent military and humanitarian responses. The attack is condemned internationally as a potential war crime and marks a significant escalation in the conflict.

00:27Israel's military
00:29has made a serious allegation against Iran,
00:32accusing it of firing a missile
00:34packed with cluster munitions
00:35into a densely populated civilian area.
00:39The claim, if confirmed,
00:41could mark a significant escalation
00:43and raise fresh concerns
00:45about the use of weapons
00:46widely condemned under international law.
00:49Here's what we know.
00:50The Israel Defense Forces,
00:52commonly known as the IDF,
00:54says that on March 1st,
00:56a missile launched from Iran
00:57carried cluster submunitions
00:59and was aimed at a civilian zone in Israel.
01:02According to IDF international spokesperson
01:05Nadav Shoshani,
01:06the attack was deliberately designed
01:08to maximize harm to civilians.
01:10He described it as a potential war crime,
01:13stating that directing attacks at civilians
01:15violates international law
01:17and vowed that Israel would continue operating
01:20to protect its people.
01:21But what exactly are cluster munitions?
01:24A cluster munition is not a single explosive device.
01:27Instead, it is a weapon that opens mid-air,
01:30offing at high altitude,
01:31and releases dozens,
01:33sometimes hundreds,
01:34of smaller bombs known as submunitions.
01:37These smaller explosives scatter across a wide area
01:40before detonating on impact.
01:42Unlike guided missiles,
01:44these submunitions are not individually targeted.
01:46They simply fall to the ground
01:48wherever gravity takes them.
01:49And that's where the danger lies.
01:51Because cluster bombs spread over large areas,
01:54they can strike homes,
01:55streets,
01:56and civilian infrastructure,
01:57especially in densely populated regions.
02:00Even more concerning,
02:02many submunitions fail to explode immediately.
02:04These unexploded duds can remain hidden for years,
02:07posing long-term threats to civilians,
02:10especially children.
02:11Cluster munitions have been banned
02:13by more than 100 countries
02:14under an international convention
02:16due to their humanitarian impact.
02:18However, not all countries are signatories.
