00:00Supreme Leader transition process begins today in Iran.
00:04That's according to security officials and sources in the country.
00:09What does the process of replacing the Supreme Leader look like?
00:14Well, first of all, we have to highlight how important is the position of the Supreme Leader in all the
00:19Iranian system.
00:20It is quite centered on this personality, on this position,
00:25because he is at the same time the religious leader and the political leader.
00:29And the Supreme Leader of the whole system.
00:32Practically, the choice of the Supreme Leader comes from the Guardians Council,
00:36which is an 88-member clergyman membership that were partially selected by him.
00:43So he practically had a lot of influence on who will choose the next Supreme Leader.
00:49Yet we are seeing now that the transitional council has been set up as per the Constitution,
00:55including the president, Bazej Kikan, the head of the judiciary, Ghulam Hussain Mohsen Ija'i.
01:03And we've just heard now who will be the member of the Council of Guardians that will be part of
01:08the transitional council.
01:09It is Ali Rida Arafi.
01:11So the three people are going to control practically the transitional region,
01:17a transitional period, sorry, until the council meets and elects the new Supreme Leader or Ayatollah per se.
01:24Now, having these three people says a lot about the transition also.
01:29We've had so many names that were potentially possible candidates for that position that is so crucial.
01:35And I think the choice of the new leader is going to say a lot about where Iran is heading.
01:40Are they heading towards a more confrontational aspect?
01:43Then we have names like Ali Larijani.
01:46We have names like the son of Khamenei, Mujtaba Khamenei.
01:51And we have other names in that field.
01:53Or if we go more towards a more pacifist, people are speaking about potentially Rouhani coming back,
02:00the former president, or some people from that circle.
02:05If Iran, I mean, I guess there's a chance now that with the choice and with the transitional period,
02:12Iran sends a very clear message to the world.
02:15I am willing to transform the attitude and the behavior and to reform this Iranian regime
02:21in a way that could potentially open significant doors, not only for direct negotiations,
02:25but also for a peaceful contribution in the future of the region.
