00:00 After India scripted history by soft landing the Vikram lander of Chandrayaan-3 on the
00:08 lunar surface on August 23, ISRO said yesterday that the lander has successfully hopped on
00:13 the surface of the moon all by itself.
00:16 Calling it a "hop test", the ISRO announced that the Vikram lander made a soft landing
00:21 on the lunar surface again recently when it fired the engines on command, elevated itself
00:26 by about 40 centimetres as expected and landed safely at a distance of 30-40 centimetres
00:32 away.
00:33 With this, India's moon lander Vikram can now hop around the moon all on its own after
00:39 the moon rover Pragyan went to sleep.
00:42 According to ISRO, Vikram soft landed on the lunar soil for a second time.
00:46 In a post on X, ISRO said, "Vikram lander exceeded its mission objectives.
00:51 It successfully underwent a hop experiment.
00:54 On command, it fired the engines, elevated itself by about 40 centimetres as expected
00:59 and landed safely at a distance of 30-40 centimetres away."
01:04 According to the space agency, the kickstart gives enthusiasm for lunar sample return in
01:08 the future and also for manned missions to the moon.
01:12 All systems performed nominally and are healthy.
01:15 Deployed RAM, CHEST and ILSA were folded back and redeployed successfully after the experiment,
01:21 ISRO said.
01:24 Last week on Saturday, ISRO had shared that the Pragyan rover installed in Chandrayaan-3
01:28 has been put to sleep and the space agency hopes to wake the rover up 14 days later on
01:33 September 22, 2023.
01:36 Chandrayaan-3, equipped with Vikram lander and Pragyan rover, was launched on July 14
01:42 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
01:45 The Vikram lander of Chandrayaan-3 successfully did the soft landing on the south pole of
01:50 the lunar surface on August 23.
01:52 The success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission made India the fourth country in the world to perform
01:56 a successful touchdown on the lunar surface and the first country to reach the uncharted
02:01 south pole of the moon.
