00:00 Hi there Psych2Goers, welcome back to another video.
00:03 Narcissism and sociopath are two terms that are thrown around often.
00:07 You may even wonder what's the difference.
00:10 Both conditions come with a lot of stigma, so to understand them better, we will be looking
00:14 at the differences between them.
00:16 What is sociopathy?
00:18 What is commonly known as sociopath is actually a person with antisocial personality disorder,
00:24 ASPD.
00:26 Sociopathic is not a medical term and is most commonly referred to by its associated condition.
00:32 People with ASPD tend to have frequent issues following rules and laws, have a lack of empathy
00:36 towards others, and act impulsively.
00:39 According to the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, some other signs of ASPD include lack
00:45 of remorse after hurting another person, reckless behavior, chaotic and abusive relationships,
00:51 manipulative behavior, disrespect towards others, substance abuse.
00:56 ASPD is considered a cluster B personality disorder, meaning that the behavior is emotional,
01:01 unpredictable, and dramatic.
01:03 Approximately 1-4% of people in the US are suspected to have this condition, but it can
01:08 be hard to tell as people often go undiagnosed.
01:12 What is narcissism?
01:14 A narcissist is someone with narcissistic personality disorder, NPD.
01:19 People with this condition tend to think highly of themselves, lack empathy for others, and
01:23 constantly seek praise.
01:25 According to both Cleveland and Mayo Clinics, signs of NPD include grandiose sense of importance,
01:32 manipulative behavior, viewing others as inferior, feeling entitled, arrogance, and will only
01:39 associate with people they feel are of high status.
01:42 Like ASPD, NPD is also a cluster B personality disorder, and people often go undiagnosed
01:48 as they do not typically seek treatment.
01:51 Approximately 5% of the population is believed to have this condition.
01:55 How are they similar?
01:57 Symptoms of NPD and ASPD do overlap in many ways.
02:02 People tend to lack empathy towards others and may take advantage of people to serve
02:05 their needs.
02:06 They can appear charming and will use that trait to win others over.
02:10 In general, people with either condition will tend to focus on themselves first and use
02:15 other people for their own gain.
02:17 Untreated, relationships with others can be stormy and toxic.
02:20 How are they different?
02:27 One of the biggest differences between the two conditions is how people with NPD care
02:31 highly about how others view them, whereas those with ASPD don't.
02:36 People with NPD may work harder to keep marriages and jobs as they're more dependent on their
02:41 status and need for approval.
02:43 On the other hand, people with ASPD may leave anything once it no longer serves its purpose.
02:48 Overall, people with NPD will work to keep gaining admiration, whereas those with ASPD
02:54 will drift around to fulfill their needs.
02:57 How are they treated?
02:58 It's important to know that sufferers of NPD or ASPD are still people.
03:04 They live with a condition that causes much stress to themselves and the people around
03:08 them.
03:09 While many don't pursue any type of mental health treatment or do so because they are
03:13 forced, both conditions have options for treatment.
03:16 Generally, they will require mental health professionals that have expertise in the specific
03:21 disorder.
03:22 A combination of medication along with psychotherapy are common to help manage symptoms of both
03:27 disorders.
03:28 While NPD and ASPD do have their similarities, they are different conditions with different
03:33 problems and treatments.
03:35 Remember to reach out to a qualified mental health professional if you're struggling.
03:38 Getting in touch with the right person can be a great first step to improving your quality
03:42 of life.
