PE2023: Ng Kok Song says he wants the government to 'restore trust' in the younger generation

Presidential candidate Ng Kok Song spoke on the major domestic and international challenges that Singapore could face in the future and what he intends to do to help them cope if elected president.

00:00 two challenges, domestic and international. I think the domestic challenge is that our society,

00:08 particularly our younger generation, are getting more cynical about government.

00:14 They're getting less trusting of government. And this is quite worrying for me.

00:23 And so one very important thing is for the government to restore trust

00:28 in the government among the people, especially the younger generation.

00:32 And how do we do this? I think we have to put right whatever has gone wrong

00:38 in terms of our standards of trust and integrity.

00:42 Internationally, of course, there's geopolitical conflict, but as long as we stay united as a

00:49 nation, we will be able to deal with the risk of the international environment.

00:56 So staying united is more important than ever. And the President has got to play that unifying role.

01:04 Because the international environment, though troublesome, also offers opportunities for

01:11 Singapore. We are a refuge for the rest of the world. And if we stay united, we will be able

01:19 to exploit all these opportunities. So both a domestic challenge and an international challenge.
