00:18 Hello.
00:21 Hi, Grandma.
00:23 Hi.
00:25 So, I'm teaching this semester, and I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish the film.
00:32 Oh, what are you teaching?
00:34 I'm teaching special effects in the film and video department.
00:38 What's that?
00:40 It's a way to sort of create magical or fantastical elements in a movie.
00:47 Like, we could film you walking and take that footage and suddenly an explosion happens behind you.
00:54 Oh, yeah?
00:56 Yeah.
00:58 Well, that should be interesting.
01:00 [Music]
01:03 How are you all doing?
01:17 Good. How was breakfast?
01:19 You like that, Ray?
01:22 Mm-hmm.
01:24 Look at all them pretty salt and pepper shakers.
01:29 Don't they look good?
01:31 Yeah.
01:33 You're going to hold it. Can you see it?
01:37 And you're going to say, "Take two."
01:42 No, wait. Don't do it until I do it.
01:44 Okay.
01:45 Okay, you pull this up.
01:47 Yep.
01:48 When do I go?
01:49 Take two. You say, "Take two," and then do it.
01:51 Okay. Whenever I want to?
01:53 Yep.
01:54 Whoops, I didn't want to.
01:56 Okay, let's go ahead and get started.
02:13 If everyone can see, I have this footage that I shot of my grandmother's salt and pepper shaker collection.
02:19 Let's just go ahead and use that to create our compositions.

02:58 Tell me why you started collecting salt and pepper shakers.
03:14 I did.
03:17 Yeah.
03:20 Oh, mercy. Okay.
03:22 I started collecting my salt and pepper shakers when I graduated from high school.
03:31 And I started working in a 5 and 10.
03:35 So I would dust their stuff all the time.
03:40 And they had some salt and pepper shakers, and so I thought, "Yeah, I just think I might want to collect them."
03:48 So that's how I got started.
03:50 So I'm going to have you look at these ducks and tell me about them.
03:56 My first set I got were ducks dressed like ladies.
04:07 I had never seen these in a long time.
04:10 What year was that?
04:16 '46, I think.
04:19 What year is it now?
04:22 [Laughs]
04:26 [Music]
04:29 Okay, so as you can see, rotoscoping is a great way to separate objects from the background.
04:44 Rotoscoping can be pretty tedious.
04:47 I love it, though. I could do it all day.
04:51 Mm-hmm.
04:59 Two feet.
05:02 Look at him.
05:04 Nail polish on his toes.
05:08 Penguins. Cute little doggies.
05:13 Got a face on both sides.
05:16 That's unusual.
05:18 Now what are these?
05:21 [Laughs]
05:23 Those are outhouses.
05:27 I could look at these all day and enjoy each one.
05:33 [Music]
05:36 [Music]
05:39 Scary.
05:54 [Laughs]
05:55 But anyway, I used to have to dust them, too, before Joe made the case for me.
06:04 [Silence]
06:06 There's Joe and Margie coming to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
06:23 Aren't they a lovely couple?
06:25 Let's get lovey-dovey.
06:27 Oh, how sweet!
06:29 [Laughter]
06:32 Don't get too frisky there, Margie.
06:35 [Laughter]
06:38 Cut the camera!
06:42 [Music]
06:45 [Explosion]
06:55 [Silence]
06:58 What are those, Grandma?
07:04 [Laughs]
07:06 Them are pipes.
07:08 Mushrooms.
07:13 What kind of a car is that? A Model T Ford, you reckon?
07:18 I think them are really keen, you know it?
07:23 Oh!
07:25 Meredith, now, you don't need to show that one.
07:29 [Laughs]
07:32 What? Who gave you that one, Grandma?
07:35 Well, I don't know, but they must have been turkey.
07:39 Now, I think these are pictures of the devil.
07:43 They're devils?
07:44 Yeah. [Laughs]
07:46 Of course, I don't know what a devil looks like, but these are guns.
07:50 What kind of guns?
07:52 Shooting guns, I don't know.
07:55 [Gunshot]
07:57 Got him.
08:00 You know, I remember when I was little, and I always wanted to get in there and touch them.
08:06 Uh-huh.
08:07 But because of the glass, we couldn't.
08:09 Yeah, that's right.
08:11 Yeah, I know, when you were little, you just kind of waddled up to where they were and wanted to get them.
08:22 And we had to say, "No, Meredith."
08:27 Okay, so subject lighting.
08:36 Generally, you want to have at least eight to ten, I would say at least five feet.
08:42 But eight to ten is ideal, between your subject and the green screen.
08:47 [Phone rings]
08:51 Hello.
08:53 Hi, Grandma.
08:55 Oh, hi.
08:57 I think I'm almost done with the film.
08:59 Oh, wonderful.
09:01 I can't wait to see you, and I just wanted to say hi and ask how you're doing.
09:07 I'm probably doing pretty good.
09:10 [Laughs]
09:11 I'm glad to hear it.
09:13 Good to talk to you, Meredith.
09:15 Good to talk to you. Love you lots.
09:18 Love you.
09:20 Bye.
09:21 Bye.

10:31 I mean, I think it's just about us, you know?
10:35 It's about you and me and how we are.
10:38 Aren't we silly?
10:40 [Laughs]
10:42 I don't know if you can see all the way back there.
10:44 Grandma, can you see when you're--
10:46 [Laughs]
10:48 You're going to smile.
10:51 Yeah.
