00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:08 Last week on AEW Dynamite it was Blood & Guts, a really well received show with big moments
00:13 like Kota Ibushi's debut in the company.
00:15 However, it's now come out that there were going to be some major differences in and
00:19 after the eponymous match that didn't make it to TV.
00:22 This comes from a report from Sports Illustrated, who make note that due to a busy day, it was
00:26 difficult to get everyone together who was involved in the Blood & Guts match and plan
00:30 everything out, which led to some pretty big knock-on effects.
00:33 The match reportedly ran long, as there was originally supposed to be 10 minutes of TV
00:37 time after the match's conclusion.
00:39 This extra time was supposed to feature the handshake between BCC and The Elite and Kenny
00:43 Omega's promo, both of which still happened, but only after the show had gone off the air.
00:48 There was also reportedly a big moment lined up for Hangman Page that was cut from the
00:52 match due to time issues, but aside from the stuff that was supposed to be on TV that wasn't,
00:56 all of the other key points were hit.
00:58 What this big moment was supposed to be for Hangman, who knows, but it does seem unfortunate
01:02 due to timing issues that it didn't happen.
01:04 And also whether this was a little "oh that's cool" moment, or potentially something much
01:09 bigger designed to kickstart a new chapter in a story or something, we don't know,
01:12 but regardless, still unfortunate for him.
01:15 On yesterday's WrestleTalk News episode, we spoke about a potential huge return being
01:19 lined up for Summerslam, as Grayson Waller was reportedly pencilled in to have a segment
01:22 on the show with a WWE legend.
01:25 I speculated on that episode that it could be The Rock, considering he and Waller have
01:29 already traded barbs on Twitter, which could also lend some intrigue into the Tribal Combat
01:33 match in the main event.
01:34 And now, Grayson Waller has invited The Rock to Summerslam in an interview with Ariel Helwani,
01:39 saying, "Rock is out of work right now.
01:41 He's unemployed, correct?
01:42 Actors are on strike.
01:43 Technically, he's unemployed and needs some work.
01:46 It's an open invitation for the Grayson Waller effect, if he wants to come on the
01:49 show.
01:50 His daughter's in a cult right now in NXT.
01:51 His family's in shambles in the main show.
01:53 He seems to be worried about Grayson Waller.
01:55 We have to do something about it."
01:56 Of course Waller, ever the troll, could just be adding more fuel to the non-existent fire,
02:01 and leaning into the rumours about this confrontation.
02:03 Or there could be some truth to it, if they've got Dwayne lined up to appear on the show,
02:07 which is just over a week away.
02:09 And as seems to be the theme of this week's news, there's injuries abound in WWE right
02:13 now.
02:14 With Kevin Owens and Liv Morgan both having reportedly genuine injuries, a fractured rib
02:18 and separated shoulder respectively, there's another injury that happened prior that we
02:22 still don't quite know the severity of yet, that being Bayley, who went down at a house
02:26 show clutching her knee.
02:28 She was seen leaving the show under her own power and without crutches, but now Bayley
02:31 posted to Instagram a photo of her and her cat.
02:34 Adorable.
02:35 But she is wearing a leg brace in the photo too.
02:38 This could just be precautionary of course, so we still don't know the severity of it,
02:42 but fingers crossed it's nothing too severe.
02:44 Now over to Oli for the Dynamite review.
02:47 I'm Oli Davis, and now it's time for my review of AEW Dynamite in about 5 misogynists.
03:07 I mean, minutes.
03:08 I meant to say minutes.
03:09 I mean, minutes.
03:10 I meant to say minutes.
03:11 I mean, minutes.
03:12 I meant to say minutes.
03:13 As Excalibur opened the show running down the card, it really felt like a soft reset
03:16 after last week's blood and guts craziness.
03:18 Emphasis on the soft though.
03:21 S-W-A-F-T SWAFT.
03:24 As I felt this show, while making an effort to revamp characters and start new storylines,
03:28 was very much a filler midcard episode.
03:31 When you really should be following up hot on last week's momentum, The Elite and Kota
03:35 Ibushi didn't feature once.
03:37 The opening match was Orange Cassidy defending his International Championship against AR
03:42 Fox, who got a Darby Allin-led video package beforehand, putting over Fox as one of Darby's
03:47 mentors.
03:48 Because that's Darby's role now, to do a video package to get over his mates he
03:51 wrestled with in Defy.
03:53 It was a great video package, the sort of thing AEW should be doing more of to get over
03:57 their roster of characters.
03:59 But it got me thinking.
04:00 Darby is so turning heel, where he beats down all the people he's helped because he thinks
04:04 they're taking advantage of him.
04:06 But I was wrong.
04:08 It was Fox who turned heel.
04:10 Cassidy vs Fox was predictably fantastic.
04:13 Cassidy continues to be one of the most versatile, yet gimmick restrained wrestlers working today,
04:18 somehow effortlessly blending his unique style with Fox's super flippy offence.
04:22 It was a technical move that won it, though, when Orange made the mousetrap pin for a record
04:27 27 defences.
04:29 In the post-match show of respect, Fox snapped Cassidy's glasses and decked him in the
04:33 face.
04:34 Darby came down to confront his friend, but never mind that, Mox is now beating up Cassidy
04:38 in the ring.
04:39 Luckily that isn't just an ROH revenge bit, or because the BCC was facing the best friends
04:44 in the main event, as Moxley vs Cassidy would be an amazing styles clash.
04:48 Hook was shown on the subway with his FDW belt disappearing in an atmospheric vignette,
04:53 which led to Jungle Boy cutting an in-ring promo on ECW because of Taz, which brought
04:58 out former ECW wrestler and current AEW producer Jerry Lynn, setting up another segment between
05:04 them next week.
05:05 If you're into the idea of a Young Heel vs ECW Legends storyline, I'm happy for
05:10 you.
05:11 I'm not particularly enthused, though, because I watched WWE, then TNA, do this every two
05:15 years for over a decade every time they ran out of ideas, and I just associate it with
05:20 that now.
05:21 Gravity finally remembered PAC, and then fought him in a match, with the spacewalking Luchador
05:26 making his Dynamite debut.
05:27 It's great to see PAC wrestling on regular TV again, but this wasn't the athletic
05:31 showcase I was expecting, nor did it have any BCC follow-up.
05:35 Which is confusing, as they'd literally already jumped Cassidy for less, and had directly
05:39 called out PAC for walking out on them a Blood and Guts earlier in a backstage promo.
05:44 Next came the latest instalment in the MJF and Adam Cole bromance storyline - an angle
05:49 so hot, it only comprised of playing two interviews from last Wednesday, and it was by far the
05:54 best thing on the show.
05:56 MJF cut an awesome, rock-style babyface fire promo on FDR ahead of their tag title match,
06:01 dropping the comedy for seriousness while still doing a pretty good impression of Dax,
06:05 and promising to punch him so hard, he'll have to spit out CM Punk's jockstrap.
06:10 Is the implication there that Dax is giving CM Punk oral sex?
06:18 Right.
06:19 I hadn't really thought about it until now.
06:23 Because, you know, usually it's your head out from the person your brown nosing's
06:29 bum.
06:30 But jockstrap's the front part.
06:33 So it's penis.
06:36 So Dax is sucking off Punk.
06:40 But like a multi-story car park, this feud has layers.
06:43 And underneath Max's speech was his tension with Cole.
06:46 He interrupted Adam to start the interview off, and only said his name at the end.
06:50 It led Cole to apologise for the misunderstanding.
06:53 Max is genuinely becoming one of his best friends.
06:55 And then, in the most surprising development so far, MJF said win, lose or draw with the
07:01 tag title match, he's going to give Cole another shot at his title.
07:06 Before you can absorb that, jilted lover Roderick Strong ran in and accused Max of planning
07:10 to turn heel again.
07:12 Cole shouted at Strong and sided with Max.
07:14 This was expertly performed and scripted, and it shows that right now in wrestling,
07:18 with several five star matches a month on free TV, what fans crave right now more than
07:22 anything, are character conflict driven soap opera storylines.
07:26 FTR got an excellent retort promo, also recorded last week, where Dax said if Max says anything
07:31 about his wife or family, he's going to tear his eyes out.
07:34 A wonderful bit of dramatic irony, as we already know MJF did mock Harwood's family.
07:39 Swerve Strickland took on Darby in the match of the night.
07:42 Both men having wrestled so many times before, they could pull off ridiculous sequences of
07:46 athletic thigh slapping counters, Swerve's leaping kick over the steps, and jumping knee
07:52 on Darby's bullet dive were phenomenal.
07:55 But Allen lost when he was attacked by a hooded man on the outside, which was revealed to
07:59 be the newest member of the Embassy, AR Fox.
08:02 The heels beat up Nick Wayne too, fully cementing the Defy-verse within AEW.
08:07 Don Callis continued his manipulative, carny piece of S-word tactics with Jericho, booking
08:11 him with Tekeshta against Sammy Guevara and Daniel Garcia next week - saying Chris himself
08:16 wanted to help them grow - and later placing a wonderfully homoerotic painting of him and
08:20 Jericho in the JAS locker room, prompting Daddy Magic, Cool Hand, Anna Jay and a very
08:25 pregnant Tay Mello to walk out on him.
08:28 And then came the segment everyone seems to be talking about.
08:32 Britt Baker vs Taya Valkyrie.
08:35 Taya just turned heel on Saturday, so I was looking forward to her facing Britt here.
08:39 Maybe there'll be some storyline.
08:42 A revamped character vs one of the more protected stars in the company.
08:47 That could be some potential direction.
08:49 Instead, what we got was an embarrassingly clunky match, perhaps because of Britt wrestling
08:53 through a back injury - something she reportedly had HeatwithThunder Rosa with for taking time
08:58 off for last year.
08:59 Baker seemed tapped out.
09:01 Which made it worse when she made Taya, who needed a win here, literally immediately tap
09:05 out once in the lockjaw.
09:07 The camera then cut to someone in the crowd, their sign dead centre of the frame, so probably
09:12 not a mistake, which read 'book the women's division better'.
09:17 So that was either a mistake, the start of some weird Vince Russo meta storyline crap,
09:21 or AEW's own production staff telling Tony Khan to stop treating the women's division
09:27 with lipstick service.
09:29 This follows the heavily criticised token women's match from last week's show, where
09:33 Baker just squashed a local enhancement talent.
09:35 We are 199 episodes into Dynamite.
09:39 Next week we'll see them host their 200th - an incredible, praiseworthy milestone, but
09:44 also one that comes with the weight of responsibility.
09:47 They're not a start-up promotion anymore, which means the fans rightfully expect more
09:51 from them.
09:52 Nearly 200 episodes in, and we're still having the same conversations about how poorly
09:57 AEW books its women's division.
10:00 The main event saw the Best Friends vs the Blackwell Combat Club vs the Lucha Bros in
10:04 a three way tag.
10:05 It was a nice throwback to the days where the Best Friends and Lucha Bros were treated
10:08 consistently as upper midcarders, but that's about two years ago now, meaning the main
10:12 event felt lacking of stakes or storyline context.
10:16 The action was good and chaotic, and the finish of Cassidy distracting Mox for Pentagon to
10:20 pick up the win over Trent was decent, but this felt too unfocused to be a good enough
10:25 cliffhanger for next week.
10:27 After putting on a top 5 of all time show for me last week, this week's Dynamite is
10:31 in the bottom 5 I've ever rated at 70%.
