00:00 Welcome to Median TV, your daily newscast with economic news.
00:12 We open this edition in Morocco.
00:15 Inflation should rise to 6.2% on average this year, before reaching 3.8% in 2024, according to Banque le Marib.
00:25 The underlying component of inflation should also know a similar trajectory.
00:31 It should go from 6.6% in 2022 to 6.1% this year, then to 2.9% in 2024.
00:41 After a rate of 6.6% in 2022, inflation continued to accelerate to reach a peak of 10.1% in February 2023.
00:52 It has decelerated, but remains at high levels, due to food products' expiring,
01:00 which reached 8.2% in March, 7.8% in April and 7.1% in May.
01:08 In the news, Morocco is also in the top 5 African countries for food importers.
01:15 According to the quarterly report published by the United Nations for Food and Agriculture,
01:23 the kingdom accounts for 7% of food imports from the continent.
01:28 Behind Egypt, Algeria and South Africa.
01:31 Nigeria is in the same place as Morocco, with 7% as well.
01:36 These 5 countries are mainly supplied in emerging markets, namely Brazil, India and Europe.
01:44 Also know that FAO is expecting a growth in world food imports,
01:50 but at a much slower pace than last year.
01:54 According to their estimates, the world food bill would reach $1,980 billion in 2023,
02:03 an increase of 1.5% only compared to last year, against 11% in 2022 and 18% in 2021.
02:13 In international news, and more precisely in Europe,
02:17 electric car sales have marked a sharp increase in May.
02:21 They now account for 13.8% of European sales,
02:26 against less than 10% in May 2022, according to the European Manufacturers Association.
02:32 Electric car sales have exploded in the Netherlands, Sweden, France and Germany.
02:39 The American Tesla now accounts for 2.6% of market share.
02:44 Hybrids are in second place and now account for 25% of sales.
02:50 Rechargeable hybrid sales continue to fall to 0.6%,
02:56 penalized by Germany, which cut subsidies on this type of motorization.
03:02 More broadly, new car registrations in Europe recorded a 10th consecutive month of growth of 18.5% in May.
03:12 In the first five months of 2023, the market grew by 18%,
03:18 notably due to Spain and Italy catching up.
03:23 Still in Europe, and more precisely in the United Kingdom,
03:26 the highest inflation in the G7 countries did not flow in May as expected by analysts.
03:32 It stagnated at 8.7% per year, compared to April, according to official statistics.
03:39 Analysts expected a modest rebound at an average of 8.4%.
03:45 Basic inflation, which excludes the volatile prices of food and energy,
03:50 has again increased in May to reach 7.1%, against 6.8% in April,
03:57 the highest rate since March 1992.
04:02 These figures should push the Bank of England to increase its main interest rate again,
04:08 currently at 4.5%.
04:11 The question is now for economists to know if the increase will be of 25 points of base or 50 points of base.
04:19 And finally, the United States will provide $1.3 billion in additional aid to the Ukrainian economy,
04:27 in particular its essential infrastructures.
04:30 This is what the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said.
04:34 A little less than half of this new US support, i.e. $520 million,
04:40 will be intended to rebuild the country's energy infrastructure,
04:45 while $657 million will be mobilized to modernize railways, ports, borders
04:53 and all essential infrastructures that connect the country with Europe.
04:58 At the beginning of the Russian invasion, the United States had already unlocked more than $20 billion
05:04 to support the economy and development of Ukraine, and more than $40 billion for military support alone.
05:12 This is the end of this edition. Thank you for watching.
