00:00 themselves at all times. Beltline is here, beltline is here. There above will be considered good blows.
00:07 Any questions from the course? Gentlemen, touch gloves now, come out of the belt, give mark to your boat.
00:13 So here we go, Eric Bazran's amateur career ended with a little bit of heartbreak. Of course the injury that took him out of the Tokyo Olympics.
00:27 But it has been nothing but success thus far as a professional.
00:33 I expect to see some good work from Eric Bazran. I've heard nothing but explosive and good things about this kid.
00:39 From early in his career all the way back to his amateur days. He's a hard worker in the gym and he's going to be quite the prospect here on the Canadian boxing scene.
00:47 Right out of the amateurs, promoter Yvonne Michel, who was once the head coach of the Canadian Olympic team and is a great talent evaluator.
00:55 Compared Bazran to Amir Khan because of his hand speed, his athleticism and his in and out footwork.
01:02 Certainly lofty praise. You can see the hand speed already, it is a lot for Vargas to deal with right now.
01:10 And Vargas wobbled by that right hand on the top of the head.
01:19 I can see why Yvonne Michel would say he has a comparison to Amir Khan. Very fast hands, good combinations.
01:29 He's hopefully going to have the chin of Amir Khan.
01:34 We haven't had an opportunity for Vargas to test that thus far because it has been all Bazran.
01:43 Just overwhelming him with hand speed thus far. Nothing too flush landing, that right hand did seem to affect Vargas, it landed on top of the head.
01:53 We'll see if Bazran can keep that kind of pace for six rounds.
01:59 He is certainly a gifted athlete inside the ring, is Bazran.
02:11 Vargas I feel is trying to weather the storm and let in Barisan, kind of calm down a little bit before he wants to really open up and mix things up with Barisan.
02:22 That's one thing that Bazran said he wants to work on at this stage of his career is pacing himself a little bit better.
02:36 Fighters often talk about adapting to a pro style and people think that means just getting more physical.
02:42 A lot of it means you have to prepare for beyond three rounds and learn how to pace your style for a longer fight.
02:49 It's not just pacing your style, it's pacing your punches, pacing your breathing, pacing on when you do things and how you do things.
02:55 Every shot can't be a knockout shot if you're fighting ten, eight, ten, twelve, three minute rounds, championship rounds.
03:02 You have to learn to pace yourself, pace your combinations and place your shots.
03:07 And I'm sure that Eric Bazran with the extent of energy and courage he has, he's going to learn to do that as his career moves forward.
03:15 He has to fight eight, ten and twelve rounds.
03:18 The second kick away of a dominant opening round from Eric Bazran.

04:13 Round two begins.
04:26 Eric Bazran digging into his bag of tricks, the deep toolbox that he has.
04:32 Coming out southpaw.
04:38 Bazran in his first international amateur fight back in 2017, beat a member of the Cuban national amateur team.
04:46 He's only the fifth Canadian fighter ever to score a win over a fighter from Cuba.
04:51 And you can see, I mean you can see how this style, particularly over three rounds, would be an absolute nightmare to deal with.
04:58 It's tough to hit and he's coming back with such fast, accurate shots.
05:02 He's so athletic Eric Bazran, he's got such good boxing skill and he knows where he's at at all times.
05:08 Even when he's making those fast, defensive movements.
05:13 Hard shot to the body there from Bazran, leaping in with that left hook downstairs.
05:27 Bazran describes himself as a mover boxer, so he's not trying to hide what his calling card is.
05:35 It is definitely his athleticism, it is definitely his legs.
05:38 His legs set up, they are his defense and they set up his offense.
05:42 He's in and out so fast and so accurately that they are his offensive defense, Corey.
05:47 Stabbing shot to the body there with the lead hand from Bazran.
05:54 And he's so fast and so athletic, Vargas doesn't even really have a chance to do anything.
05:59 Yes he's coming forward and yes he's trying his best, but the athleticism of Barzon is just too much for Vargas.
06:09 Another left hook downstairs from Bazran, a lead uppercut.
06:16 Now Bazran is just one of those athletic talents that can get away with shots like that, right?
06:23 Long range uppercuts like that, those only work if you're fast enough to get out quickly enough.
06:28 Kind of reminds me of the old Roy Jones days, me and putting his hands behind his back, dodging shots and landing beautiful counter shots.
06:47 Remember that Bazran does have in mind that he wants to come out of this fight completely unscathed.
06:53 If he could be untouched, which he basically has so far, through this fight even better.
06:57 Because that would keep his next fight on the schedule, which is less than a month from now back home in British Columbia.
07:03 Vargas might have landed his first jab of the fight.
07:13 Bazran tries to come over the top with a big right hand, Vargas wisely ties up.
07:18 As the seconds tick away and Vargas will go back to his corner and try and figure out a way to slow this man down.
07:25 Well he's going to have to start doing something, he's got to throw punches or throw caution into the wind because Eric Barzon is just doing whatever he wants to do in there.
07:35 He's using the angles, he's using his jab, he's jumping with pop shots, he's doing whatever he wants in there.
07:41 Vargas has no answer whatsoever.
07:44 He's expecting the first attack, the second attack is going to take him out.
07:57 Keep your eyes open for that.
08:02 His hand is in one place, up, that's it.
08:06 Make it move, use some feints, then counter.
08:10 [whistle]
08:12 A very relaxed atmosphere in the Bazran corner right now.
08:21 Pitching a shutout to this point as we begin round three.
08:35 And Bazran for as much movement as he's showing in this fight Steve, really has settled his feet down a little bit.
08:42 Even since we last saw him against Juan Carlos Ramirez on the Kim Clavel/Yes Canary undercard.
08:48 Bazran seems to have taken some steps, you know, to adapt to a pro style a little bit more.
08:54 He has, he's not moving around like an amateur dace, he is making the great spins off the ropes or spins there,
09:00 and he plants his feet and he'll come back with another hard shot instead of dancing away like an amateur dace.
09:04 He is learning to sit down and punch for us.
09:07 Bazran just winding up with that right hand.
09:12 And Steve, when you have a fighter like Bazran who has these kinds of gifts, you also don't want to take them away from him.
09:21 You don't want to turn Eric Bazran into some kind of, you know, inside fighter or anything like that.
09:26 You just want to fine tune what he's bringing to the table, which is exceptional athletic talent.
09:31 Bazran has a ton of talent, a ton of athletic ability, but when you get to that next level,
09:36 Corey, when you want to get to the top and be a world champion, you have to learn every angle of the ring.
09:41 Fighting on the inside, boxing the outside, his natural skill and talent will take Bazran to the top at some point of his career,
09:49 but you have to learn every aspect of the game inside that spirit circle, because at any time, anything can happen.
09:56 Well, and you will eventually run into an opponent who just thrives against this style, for example.
10:01 And then what do you do?
10:02 We've seen the Marcos Maidana versus Amir Khan.
10:05 You get a tough guy in there like that against a fast guy like that, there's still a way to get hit, there's still a way to lose.
10:11 So you have to be prepared for everything inside the spirit circle.
10:14 Speaking of Amir Khan, we just saw a right hand from Bazran.
10:18 It looked a lot like the right hand that dropped Marcos Maidana to the body.
10:23 And you can see where the comparisons came from as Bazran was turning pro, as he now shows off his skills as a southpaw.
10:31 Bazran throughout his amateur career was also mindful of what will come after boxing.
10:44 He handled studying for a degree in criminology during his amateur career.
10:52 Vargas now trying to do some work to the body.
10:55 And a good spin there by Bazran.
11:00 And Vargas just completely out-skilled and out-maneuvered thus far.
11:16 And Bazran so fast and so accurate that it's almost like Vargas is becoming a little bit gun-shy.
11:22 He's scared to let his hands go because he knows he's going to get hit with a counter.
11:27 And maybe two, three and four of them.
11:30 Bazran with his back to the ropes.
11:34 Great defensive work there by Bazran. He blocked all those shots and rolled with them all.
11:43 And he really let his hands go as he had Vargas on the ropes.
11:48 And now Vargas with his back to the ropes.
11:51 When you get in, you can hit with that left hand down.
12:03 You can throw him with the right hand, but you can't hit him with the left hand.
12:08 You would want to grab him.
12:10 Don't hit him. Just throw him.
12:12 And he's out.
12:14 We'll see if Andres Vargas can turn things around here as round four begins.
12:26 I mentioned that Vargas has been going the distance with some pretty good fighters in recent outings.
12:34 Against Aidil Yam, against Brandon Leon Benitez.
12:37 Much more experienced fighters than him and frankly than Erick Bazran.
12:41 The level of talent he's encountering here against Bazran is probably in excess of anything he's seen thus far as a pro.
12:48 And he's really taking it here versus Bazran here.
12:52 But credit to Vargas. He's still coming forward.
12:55 He just doesn't really have an answer for the speed and skill of Bazran.
13:00 But he's coming forward. He wants to do something, but he just really can't do something.
13:04 It's the speed and skill of Bazran.
13:08 [Countdown]
13:10 Nonetheless, Vargas not easily discouraged.
13:17 We mentioned he trains alongside Robinson Castellanos, who's now retired.
13:22 Of course, Castellanos, a guy that wound up with 14 losses on his record, but was a contender all the way to the end of his career.
13:29 I'm not saying that Vargas is going to have that kind of path, but I think when you train in a gym with guys like that, Steve,
13:36 you kind of develop that attitude. Like, "Okay, one bad round, one bad fight. That's okay. We can bounce back."
13:43 And he has that sort of style. I mean, like, he's been getting picked apart here by Bazran,
13:48 but he's still coming forward, and you can still see in his eyes that he's not out of it.
13:52 He's moving forward, that he wants to win this fight.
13:55 He's got to find a way to make something happen here and let his hands go.
13:59 [Countdown]
14:01 Bazran trying to whip that uppercut.
14:16 He's going into the final minute here of round four.
14:27 Now you see why Yvonne and Michel had such high regard of their Bazran.
14:33 The skill of this kid is pretty impressive for you to make,
14:37 where I haven't seen a skill like this in a very long time fight here in Ontario.
14:41 Good hands, good footwork, good discipline, great speed.
14:46 It's my first time seeing a fight live, and I'm very, very impressed with his skill set.
14:53 [Countdown]
14:55 Bazran sticking to what he knows best, too.
15:01 He's not taking unnecessary risks here. He's landing his shots and getting out.
15:05 He's not developing bad habits just because he could probably stand in front of Vargas
15:10 and maybe try and bang him out. There's no sense in that.
15:13 Exactly, Corey. Again, that goes back to discipline from a long amateur experience.
15:17 He knows, I mean, if he wanted to stand there and trade him,
15:19 maybe push for a knock would be good, but he knows that he's going to continue to land these shots
15:24 and slowly but surely break Vargas down and hopefully get his stoppage.
15:29 But great, great work from Eric Bazran in the opening four rounds of this fight.
15:34 Now let's do some off-beat stuff. Come up, wait a bit, right?
15:37 Let's do some off-beat attacks now, okay?
15:40 Don't be scared to do some uppercuts.
15:44 You've got uppercuts and his hands in one spot. It's on the side of his face.
15:48 He does uppercuts sometimes. He's not expecting it.
15:52 One more. Off-beat attacks.
15:59 It's a workout. It's not even fucking basketball, man. We're doing shit.
16:07 [crowd cheering]
16:10 Here we go, round five underway of what has been thus far a pretty flawless performance from Eric Bazran.
16:32 As he has just been picking apart the very game Andres Vargas who,
16:38 you know, if we were counting punches here, I don't know, is he maybe in the single digits still?
16:44 In terms of what Vargas has been able to land here tonight, I don't know that that's hyperbole.
16:49 They're definitely a lot lower than Bazran, but he just doesn't have an answer.
16:56 He knows he's not fast enough and Bazran is still so into this fight,
17:01 he's so athletic and he's got such good endurance that he's so fresh
17:06 that Vargas is scared to open his hands and let go.
17:09 Well, I think in this fight though, Steve, we are kind of seeing a peek into the future of Bazran,
17:16 particularly on his way up, which is that if he's in a fight and he can't hurt the guy or doesn't hurt his opponent,
17:23 we're probably going to see a lot of 120-108s on the way up for Eric Bazran.
17:28 And there's nothing wrong with that. I mean, you've seen guys like Floyd Mayweather,
17:31 and even myself in my career, I wasn't a big knockout puncher,
17:34 but a guy like Eric Bazran can outbox and pick apart guys as they keep walking forward all night long
17:41 and make his way to a world title because it's a sport of boxing and you can do that.
17:46 Bazran may be flying under the radar a little bit as a prospect, even here in Canada.
17:55 Again, we mentioned the fact that he was going to be in Tokyo,
17:59 and this is a guy who has wins over fighters from Cuba, a lot of international success.
18:04 And right now, starting to put a hurt on Andres Vargas, who goes down for the first time.
18:10 It was the fast right hand after the jab that really hurt Vargas, followed up by another one-two from Bazran.
18:19 Referee Dave Dunbar gives a close look and he's going to let him go on.
18:24 Oh! Hard right hand. Immediately.
18:27 Bazran all over Andres Vargas, who is completely out of answers.
18:34 Still willing to fire back, but there is just nothing that he can do with Eric Bazran right now.
18:43 The speed and intensity of Eric Bazran is just too much for Vargas.
18:49 You gotta wonder, should his corner maybe throw in a towel and call it a night?
18:54 Bazran doubling up on that hook. Nearly landed that hybrid uppercut. That would have been a beautiful shot.
19:04 As Vargas just tries to make it out of this round.
19:12 We'll see what is happening in his corner, because you're right Steve, there may be some decisions to make.
19:18 In a fight that right now seems completely out of his grasp.
19:22 And the speed and power of Eric Bazran finally catches up with Vargas.
19:37 As Bazran just pop-shotting Vargas.
19:44 And ultimately it was the one-two, but the power and speed of the right hand is what put Vargas down earlier in the round.
19:52 If you feel touched, let me tell you. I want you to finish this fight standing up.
19:57 Don't stay up.
19:59 [crowd noise]
20:04 [crowd noise]
20:11 [crowd noise]
20:21 The sixth and final round now underway, and Steve I know we lauded the unbreakable spirit of Andres Vargas earlier in the fight.
20:30 And indeed he's still in this fight, still trying, but that looked like a dejected fighter in the corner to me.
20:35 He had looked like he's had enough. He has no answers, and he just, when you're looking across and you see Eric Bazran,
20:42 and you see how amped up he is, and he's still got lots of gas left in the tank, and he's on his toes moving side to side,
20:48 encountering everything you throw at him, it's very deflating as a fighter.
20:53 Bazran knocking, hitting him so hard he knocked one of the logos off the shorts of Andres Vargas.
21:10 I was going to say, Dave Dunbar is getting work out here too, trying to get out of the way of Eric Bazran.
21:16 But Vargas just cannot figure out where Bazran is going to be.
21:21 Bazran just spinning him around, showing him angles he's not expecting.
21:27 Nice check hook there from Bazran.
21:33 And even though Bazran is playing with him and having a lot of fun, these are exactly the type of fights you need to grow in the game of professional boxing.
21:40 If Vargas were to come down here and get hit in the first round and lay down, Bazran doesn't learn anything.
21:47 But to have a guy come at you for six rounds, let you work on your craft, let you see what works and doesn't work,
21:53 this is a very good fight for Eric Bazran to grow in his career, become a future world champion,
21:59 to have a tough guy like Vargas in front of him.
22:02 >> Well again, we go back to what Bazran said his edict was at this stage in his career,
22:06 adapting to the pro style, learning about pacing. And you're right, if he had just flattened Vargas in round one,
22:12 he doesn't get that opportunity to learn. Exactly, but over six rounds, Bazran has shown he can keep this up very easily for six rounds.
22:19 >> Exactly, so overall, it may not have been an exciting war and the crowd may not have been at the edge of their seat,
22:26 this is a very, very good fight for Eric Bazran to learn and to grow to become a future world champion down the line.
22:33 >> Well I think Steve that boxing purists, they can spot talent, and Bazran's talent is athleticism,
22:39 it jumps off the screen and yeah, was this a barn burner as you described? No, of course not.
22:45 However, I think there are a lot of people that would tune in and want to see more of Bazran
22:50 and are curious as to what his ceiling is.
22:52 >> Like you said, a barn burner, no. But one of the most exciting fighters we've seen here at Red Owl, absolutely yes.
22:59 >> Inside the final 20 seconds of our co-feature here.
23:06 An exciting and thoroughly dominant performance from Eric Bazran, who just put himself on the radar of a lot of fans here tonight.
23:26 >> It should be a very, very easy night for the judges tonight to score this fight.
23:36 >> Credit to Andres Vargas, and if you're matchmaking for Eric Bazran, that's exactly what you needed here tonight.
23:43 He took a knockdown, he didn't fold, he got back up.
23:46 >> He kept coming forward, he had his hands up, he appeared to have the threat of a tough fighter,
23:53 which made Eric Bazran be his best and put his back to the ropes and feel that pressure of somebody walking him down.
24:00 And like I said, I don't want to beat a dead horse.
24:02 That's the experience you need to become a great fighter.
24:05 Having a 10-0 with 10 knockouts in the first round will not make you a good fighter.
24:10 The rounds and the experience under the hot lights, feeling the pressure, is what makes you a great fighter
24:15 as you move forward in a young career like Eric Bazran.
24:19 >> Eric Bazran has excelled in every style of fighting he's ever attempted.
24:33 He initially wanted to enter MMA, but he was too young to take classes, and good thing for him because he has turned out.
24:42 >> And here's his story of the night, Corey. Bazran is too fast, too strong, too athletic, too everything for Andres Vargas.
24:54 But hats off to Andres Vargas. He stayed in there tough.
24:57 After the beating he took when he got dropped, he could have easily stayed down and the crowd would have been okay with it.
25:02 He got up and showed that he has a heart and that he's here to fight.
25:06 But overall the skill, speed, and athleticism of Eric Bazran was just too much for Vargas.
25:13 And I really, really look forward to seeing future fights from Eric Bazran in the future.
25:17 >> Alright, we're ready to make this one official. Let's send it out to David Neiman.
25:21 [bell ringing]
25:23 >> Ladies and gentlemen, after six rounds of action, we go to the scorecards.
25:28 Judges at ringside, Alan Davis, Jasper Kujawski, and Martin Dalida all see the bout identically.
25:35 Scoring 60 to 53, all to your winner by unanimous decision, Eric Bazran!
25:46 [applause]
25:50 >> Well we said we were looking forward to seeing this guy here tonight, and we certainly were treated to a great fight.
25:57 We're treated to six rounds of a spectacular boxing talent.
