00:34And both guys are very confident yesterday at the fighter meetings, you know.
00:38You can even tell by their body language and stances.
00:41Both very confident. Both aware of what they want to do.
00:46Maribel looks sharp already. Good sharp jab.
00:49Wailai with, obviously, a big background.
00:52A lot of push behind his career and has been very impressive thus far.
00:55But Maribel may be below the radar, but he was showing up very, very prepared yesterday in terms of confident
01:02body language and whatnot.
01:03He also showed up with a whole army of people that made the drive down from nearby Lancaster, California, about
01:08an hour away.
01:09But Honolulu is in the building as well, as we heard a loud response in support of Wailai.

01:30What you want to do with a taller fighter, a guy like Maribel who's fighting tall, he's got a long

02:50A lot of times, taller fighters, they're so accustomed to pulling straight back
02:54and making guys miss, they don't tend to go underneath punches.

03:56that's a pretty good first round there i mean both fighters got their licks in for sure
04:00very very sharp i thought maribel looked really good early on but i think while i finished the
04:04stronger of the two landed about three really really good right hands we're going to see
04:08one of them was right there and overhand right but maribel came right back with a body shot
04:12you know he's still in there to win this fight but that was the punch i was really concerned
04:15about for maribel pulling straight back especially along those ropes while i has found his timing
04:20already here coming into round two right this one is a sixth rounder yeah we start round two
04:26sorry when your guy goes straight back right throw behind him he's gonna wind up at you don't want
04:30you don't wind up hitting him because he's gonna stay straight up like that if he keeps going
04:32straight back up high throw behind him and he's gonna walk basically keep backing into the shot
04:37i always think of the very famous fight between lennox lewis and hasim rahman he threw the punch
04:41in anticipation of him pulling straight back got clipped right on the chin
04:47wiley throwing some heat here the start round two yeah he's trying to psychologically break
04:51maribel now he's trying to take away the confidence maribel has that confident body language but
04:57wants to keep pressing him back does wiley and maribel it looks like he fights well off his back foot
05:02he tried to come forward at the end of last round and got clipped with a right hand over the

05:06like i said wiley has good his timing already he's able to counter that jab right over the top
05:14maribel sticking true to his jab using that to set up his combinations but wiley will
05:19close the distance just using hooks to come in as he throws a jab there to the body but
05:24he's definitely looking to land those hooks up top on that exposed chin right there just like that

05:31i like the adjustment in this fight from wiley he's got a fighter he's taller than him so he's
05:35fighting in a much more crouched position than he normally does which is showing to be effective
05:39especially with that stab right there that heart punch maribel can fight he just has a bit of an
05:43incomplete style to him you know sometimes he gets out thought by by wiley wiley has a bit more
05:49dimensions to his bag and it's proven to be a difference as now uh maribel turns to alpo
05:54yeah he did that earlier in uh in round one when he got caught by the right hand yeah it

05:59like wiley knows more like what he wants to do in there where maribel looks like he's still figuring
06:03out that was a good combination there and right back comes wiley with a punctuation to the body with
06:09the hook there on that combo excellent back and forth exchanges here and good good adjustment there by
06:13wiley because maribel had his hands up this time when he pulled back so then what did my wiley do

07:38more with it i like the adjustment of that one because he fell a little bit short at the

07:49these kind of smaller rings the big guys with these long rings they know what they're doing

08:27you have the first two rounds to wiley i do i do i thought uh the first round was close

08:33he he closed the round real strong second round he looked to be more in control but
08:38maribel's in this fight very much and you see him coming back with these shots good exchanges
08:41still has that body language like he's here to win the fight
08:45he rolled with that shot too there a bit taking some of the steam off of it but
08:49right when he gets something
08:51wiley tends to get his right back
08:54yeah that's that uh that hawaiian mentality you're talking about champ
08:57he wants to get his looks back immediately

09:23you can tell the steam on the punches from wiley are coming with a little bit more force
09:28yeah that's because he's going forward you know maribel's fighting off the back foot
09:31and wiley's been really good at making him just miss or get hit on the end of the punches
09:35whereas wiley has better balance once he does let his combinations go
09:40well in this kind of posture here with maribel's back nearly up against ropes is how the first two rounds

09:45there's that anticipation punch once again as maribel moved out to his left
09:50while i threw that right hand to where he was going to be
09:58right there i just saw maribel got a little bit gun shy
10:01he was in position to throw the right hand and didn't

10:04might be still feeling that body shot

10:15this is one of the things i was saying yesterday about wiley we had the chance to pull
10:19his whole career
10:20he's a very complete fighter
10:21he goes back to the jab he sets up body shots he's got good awareness and defense
10:26and we saw all the ropes in that last round
10:32and he's pretty you know even though these shots from maribel are kind of clipping him
10:35he's pretty defensively sound standing right there in the pocket with his confidence
10:39not only three professional fights i mean he doesn't seem flustered there

10:51i mean i'd like to see a more consistent jab he's starting to back up and using the jab less

10:56less and he's just kind of sticking the left hand out there
10:58you know i think maribel has the the potential to use a have a good jab but he's just not

11:02with with these a lot of wildlife sort of bully him away from it and you see he's moving around
11:07but not really jabbing as much anymore
11:09you see he's kind of shied away from it you see when
11:11when you want to use it it's just a little bit of a touch it's not a it's not a
11:14uh an enforcement
11:15an enforcement jab so wildlife is not intimidated by it
11:18are we at the stage yet champ where the winning mentality is starting to leave maribel
11:22or it's still a little early for that

12:06landing the harder shots the more efficient shots
12:09the cleaner shots dictating the pace that you know the center of the ring they're having
12:13showing showing good defense too this is what this is what generalship is look at the awareness
12:18even the punches that are touching aren't landing they're hitting glove
12:20they're slapping he's slipping and sliding with them
12:22he's rubbernecking the shots that do get through
12:24and then he comes right back and lands a big right hand over the top
12:29very comprehensive effort so far from wildlife
12:33as we get on now to the second half of the fight round four
12:39and if you're i was kind of asking you earlier paulie if you're in maribel's corner
12:42i mean you got three rounds left either try to get a knockout or get some of these rounds
12:46back in your pocket because it could be a shutout right now
12:48yeah it probably it probably is a shutout
12:51and the numbers back that up as you take a look at the total punches landed
12:5437 for wailai 19 for maribel
12:57i think maribel's got to start using that jab and start backing wailai up a little bit
13:00to get some kind of respect he's he's waiting too long
13:03and wailai is consistently being first more and more
13:12right there when maribel is first he does have some advantages he's got to be consistently first
13:17he's got to start making an effort to do that
13:19but wailai doesn't break position even when those shots do land

13:26well that's why you got to step around or do something
13:27you see you got to you got to create the new punching angle
13:30after you you hit a guy when he's not breaking position
13:35yeah you're seeing
13:37maribel starting to push off rather than a punch
13:40you know and he's got he's got some power you can see he's got some sharp he's got some quickness
13:43there's that big right hand over the top
13:46just just short another big right hand
13:48this is this is what maribel needs to do he needs to let those hands go

15:55it's hard to get fights out there but he gets great work with god fighters like fundura
16:00so he's been in the gym with top quality even though he hasn't been in the ring as a pro
16:05as much as he would like to be
16:08and in between that works a job in construction
16:12that can help with your power
16:13and masonry so
16:14you know he's putting in work in the gym
16:17and
16:18and on the job
16:26all right let's see if maribel can build on the momentum
16:30that he
16:32started to turn the tide in round four at least how we see it here
16:35obviously not the official judges but
16:37this is the first round five for both of these fighters
16:44let's see if wiley can get back to that active work rate he showed in the first three rounds
16:49that's a nice left hook to start
16:53yeah but you gotta be careful here maribel looks switched on
16:55and i think he's he's riding well high off that last round where he had a much better round

17:25stepping in and i think maribel thought he was going to pay for pulling back to the head shots
17:29and he kind of raised up his guard and wiley took the body punches instead
17:32changed it up a little bit when he closed the gap this time
17:36that's one of the benefits of fighting at that crouch position
17:38you can throw the shots high over the top
17:40or you can stay where you are and dig to the body
17:43and digging again to the body is
17:45wiley finishing up with a hook to the head
17:46i feel like we're back in round one the way these guys are going back and forth

18:02that's the thing i like the follow-up from wiley
18:04he lands a good combination doesn't leave it alone

18:09maribel's trying to think but is he overthinking and not being active enough here

18:34and that's the thing even though maribel has the height
18:38slight height and reach advantage
18:42while i's ability to change range and manipulate
18:44the distance is giving him troubles
18:46he's allowing wiley walking closer
18:48good body shot by wiley

18:57i think this is going to be a pivotal round in this fight
19:03the fact that wiley has come back
19:06got back into control is a big deal here
19:16he's got to be careful though
19:18wiley's got that tendency to lean towards his right

19:25those are some nasty uppercuts thrown by maribel that were just missed

19:47yeah maribel is getting a good account of himself but he's gonna need if he wants to win this fight

20:40he's landed the harder shots the better combination the cleaner the cleaner shots absolutely
20:45take a quick look at the round by round total punches landed
20:5154 there by wiley the only round that he lost well actually the last round too 14 shots from maribel
20:57compared to round four which was much more clear

21:11yeah i think wiley just wanted to be an impressive prospect and continue to win impressively
21:15while maribel here is trying to still fighting with the winning mentality we talked about winning mentality but maribel's still

21:20and he's going for it in the last round he's not going to be content to lose a decision
21:24it's a really good thing to see in a young fighter
21:26you know things aren't going your way especially when you're used to it
21:29but still staying in there trying to win
21:39think about that's the only thing about cutting your teeth on probox you're going to be tested there are no
21:44easy fights here
21:48this is going to be a good learning experience for both these guys for sure
21:53and regardless i want to see both of them again
21:56yeah and i think maribel's maribel excuse me has just got to learn to sit down just a tad bit

22:02he's landed some flush shots they just have not given wiley anything to be concerned about
22:08just like right there a lot of it's been the defense and the range manipulation from wiley that's that's made

22:15also have any identity you know if you're not going to be that kind of puncher you know have the
22:19identity
22:20to be consistent with the jab be consistent with that in and out boxing and being first
22:24on that in and out boxing and responding first or reacting first
22:27it's only kind of those switches between orthodox and southpaw at times

22:36maribel wants to respond right away again
22:42at this point no it's back and forth it's just a numbers game

22:49and throwing some dangerous shots

24:00there's a strong push by maribel
24:04you know very very intense back and forth throughout
24:07it looked like wiley was going to pull away early on
24:09but maribel never lost that winning mentality
24:12kept trying to win kept trying to push as rounds went on
24:17but a lot of times the eye-catching shots
24:19were more
24:21coming from the side of wiley
24:23especially early on
24:27see shots like that where
24:28if you're not paying attention
24:30you saw that none of those punches landed
24:33really good defense shown by wiley
24:34this is the first three rounds
24:44good two-way action between two undefeated fighters who do not want to see their undefeated record
24:48i wouldn't mind that it being an a-rounder you know
24:51they still had enough gas in the tank
24:54i feel like that actually would have helped out maribel a bit more
