00:20super bantamweights in the world, Australia's Sam Woodman
00:24and Rodrigo Ruiz from Argentina.
00:27And we know all about what has been going on back of house
00:31throughout the afternoon.
00:33Yeah, a lot of spite between the two camps, right?
00:36From the weigh-in to the pre-locker rooms, right?
00:38Yeah, well, it really kicked off at the weigh-in,
00:40but I think it existed beforehand from talking to Sam.
00:43They had a bit of history with sparring partners and the like,
00:46and, gee, no love lost here today.
00:49And Sam and Rodrigo just stood there staring at each other
00:53throughout those introductions.
00:55And you see Rodrigo, left hand.
00:58Yeah, and then watching Rodrigo on video,
01:00I found him to be very left-hand happy, very left hook happy.
01:03Even in the southpaw stance, he throws a lot of left.
01:06I'm going to say I think he's probably a converted southpaw.
01:09I think that is the case, yeah.
01:10Just watching some of those fights, it does look like that,
01:14doesn't it?
01:14So Sam has to be careful with that hook,
01:16try to make it a technical fight, because Rodrigo's going to try
01:19to make it a physical and crazy fight there,
01:21with his jumping in shots like that.
01:23Yeah, he just leapt in with that left hook.
01:25He goes again, and that is the punch that he's looking for,
01:27and he always does that big left hook,
01:29and he'll throw it from all sorts of angles.
01:31Goodman, he tries to work with his left hand himself,
01:33goes up with it to the body.
01:35There's a looping right hand from Ruiz.
01:39He's reaching out again.
01:41So he turns southpaw.
01:42That can be one of the confusing things about Ruiz.
01:44He'll go southpaw, he'll go right-handed,
01:46wing left-hands from both stances.

02:01So a lot of action in the first 90 seconds here,

02:06Yeah, and Goodman, I think if he takes a round-at-a-time approach,
02:11and he's a superior technical fighter,
02:13and he puts some rounds in the bank,
02:14and he starts causing more and more frustration on the part of Ruiz.
02:17But if he starts to engage in these kind of crazy exchanges,
02:19it'll give Ruiz confidence.
02:24And he gets a weight to that,
02:27as Goodman stays out of the way of that left hook.
02:31Wild upper cap, Ruiz.
02:34And he misses out of the top with the left hand now.
02:38As Goodman japs away and tries to work from that position.
02:43To keep his defense short and tight and technical,
02:46that's what Goodman wants to do.
02:48It's a little bit awkward for Ruiz's offense,
02:51so it's hard to counter him at first.
02:53But I think within a few rounds,
02:54if Goodman starts to get the timing, it gets slowed down.
02:58Goodman, Ruiz responded, and Goodman finished over the top.
03:03So Ruiz has switched stances several times already, just in round one.
03:10Yeah, he does that constantly.
03:12Just goes back and forth from Southport to Orthodox.
03:16All the while, they're looking for those big left hands.
03:19And there he goes, leading with it on that occasion.
03:22And leaping out with it there, the Argentinian.

05:01and goodman will be pretty comfortable with how he started here but he's certainly got a
05:06live and quality fighter in front of him yeah i like that he's touching the body here and there
05:10although ruiz goes to the body himself very well there but i think you've got to sort of take the
05:15enthusiasm out of ruiz by going to that body setting up setting up deceptively off that jab
05:21goodman again goodman comes off as a better technical fighter but ruiz is alive as you can
05:24see there throws these wild combinations and he's very explosive with them
05:32this is the consistency goodman needs right there see the little short shots maybe they may not be
05:35as explosive and wild but they're he keeps it consistent it'll break ruiz's confidence a little
05:41uppercut on the inside from goodman then he goes one two and three and that's a good left hook
05:45from sam goodman the crowd the mad bunch and the rest of them here in woolongong is
05:50they enjoyed that so there's a moment there for goodman see what goodman's doing too and that's
05:55just with the good technical punches but he's taking away the real estate the ground
05:59here comes ruiz
06:01i like to see the replay between rounds yeah he sort of tried to shrug it off but
06:08gee he did leap out towards him and goodman his body language has changed here for a moment and
06:14there is some bruising around that eye too so sam goodman on his bike and trying to stay out of
06:19trouble here against rodrigo ruiz who certainly senses a moment yeah he must he must have caught him
06:25but he he's reacting very defensively since and there's plenty of swelling around that eye too so
06:31goodman he's worn that shot and have to get back to what he was doing well because that will give
06:38confidence to the argentinian who now tries to find something similar
06:45uppercut ruiz
06:47that's the thing ruiz has momentum changing explosiveness you see that the eye as you mentioned
06:52ben it's getting real swung really quickly the right eye of goodman
06:57goodman had been having a pretty good round and that that shot changed the entire momentum of the round
07:02goodman had been having a pretty good round and it's a little lapse there from goodman and a good moment

07:09very eye-catching moment for ruiz there
07:14there goes ruiz again sitting down on shots smiling yeah he's enjoying it
07:21and with all that feeling those moments will be all the more enjoyable for these fighters and ruiz
07:30acknowledges the crowd who haven't really embraced him
07:50so it was a good round early on from goodman and that was the moment but then
07:56okay right there that did catch him you see that yeah
07:58that brought him i thought he kind of slipped away from it and slid away from it but not
08:02it's a big shot and again it's those big left hands from ruiz again i i i dare to say
08:06he's a natural
08:07left-hander that was a big timing shot as goodman a little bit lazy sticking out the right hand
08:12ruiz coming right over the top of it instantaneously yeah really good stuff from ruiz and those punch
08:18stats they tell the story as well for the argentinian so he scored with plenty of shots
08:27and he will grow in confidence after the success he had in round number two as
08:31joel keegan and the sam goodman corner try and get their fighter going here in round number three

08:41and a very important fight
08:46so we're trying to get on that jab again it's going to be the simple things that win you this
08:50kind
08:50of fight because you know a guy like ruiz wants you to engage in all kinds of crazy exchanges and
08:55he's got that explosive power so it's going to be the simplicities goodman's got to realize what he
09:00is and what he isn't and what he's not is a guy who exchanges he's a technical fighter he's got
09:04to
09:04keep this and turn this into a technical fight and that's going to be to his advantage if he can
09:07maintain that discipline
09:12explosive again ruiz leaping out with that left hands and he's pretty comfortable the southpaw stance
09:20here in round three is just sticking it out for the argentinian and he leaps forward always looking
09:26for the big left one way or the other oh right hand goodman again there's more of that from goodman
09:33i tell you ruiz a couple of jabs there and then ruiz can offset some of the technical stuff of
09:37goodman with
09:37his own jab something that ruiz to me doesn't do enough to use his own jab
09:45oh there it is again yeah it has to be disciplined when i talk about this one it's got to
09:49be defensive
09:50as well not just with these little offensive touches because otherwise he gives the round back
10:02trying to jab away is goodman going to the body as well that's something goodman can't forget he's
10:07got to get to the body a little bit more there's been good spots where he's showing some good body
10:11attack in this fight i think he's got to be a little bit more consistent with it
10:18one two and three you had success with that in the previous round of goodman but he has to stay
10:25awake i think in between these little exchanges there could be some feints there too a little
10:28clash of heads but i think you offset ruiz you land those little combinations and then in between the next
10:33one maybe drop some feints otherwise ruiz is going to keep being very aggressive
10:40leads with the right hand there this is ruiz but probably trying to set up the left hand as he
10:46does so
10:49ruiz is pesky because he's constantly switching stances and and he loads you to sleep he does almost
10:54nothing for a few seconds and then all of a sudden he's throwing some big handmakers and he changes
10:59stands his mid mid mid handmaker too he runs at you and leaps and he finds himself back in orthodox
11:06again ruiz which also puts you in position for clashes of heads as well actually you got to be
11:10careful with good body shots there by ruiz he finishes over the top with that left hook his punch
11:26and he raises the hands to the crowd again ruiz he's very happy with how things are going

14:31You can touch him, touch him, and then maybe take a walk around, and make Ruiz be the one to

14:39Urgency there from Goodman, but Ruiz, he extinguishes it with that left hook again.

17:04And you sort of lull him to sleep.
17:05Because Ruiz is looking for a fight.
17:06You see, every second he's looking for an exchange, looking for something big.

17:10And with a better technique that Goodman has, you can sort of carry the quiet rounds.

24:11and the leverage on his punches
24:12that Goodman was able to get on
24:17well that was a very good round for Sam Goodman

24:22I don't know if he's scoring on the run Paulie
24:24but who's winning the fight?
24:25I mean early on I felt like Ruiz had a little bit of an advantage
24:28that was a good round for Goodman
24:30I haven't scored a round by round
24:32but it's probably the 3-3 or 4-2 Ruiz for me
24:37so it is poised
24:39the title eliminator
24:40and Goodman wants more of what he produced in round 6
24:46that was by far the best of it for the Australian
24:49and also the fact that he had a really good round
24:52fighting a fight that you would think Ruiz wants to fight
24:54so he didn't have to run around and try to be too technical
24:58he was technically very good as an inside fighter
25:00that round
25:02which can also play on the mind of Ruiz
25:04because that's the kind of fight Ruiz expects to be winning
25:06they can take some confidence from him
25:08and she's had plenty of it Ruiz
25:12as goodman presses in again
25:14as Ruiz is just happy to shuffle back and defend
25:19Ruiz is giving more and more ground
25:21just a little bit in the last couple of rounds
25:23earlier on when Goodman would try to make some progress coming forward
25:27Ruiz would meet him with some explosive surprising shots
25:31Goodman continues consistency on this pressure
25:33it seems like Ruiz is sort of
25:36not saying wilting completely
25:37but wilting enough to give more and more ground
25:40feels like maybe those body shots
25:42are very important for Sam Goodman

25:45his pot shot right hands are landing more consistently now

25:52he still has that huge left hand though

26:04Ruiz is forced to go backwards more and more
26:06he may be able to take the sting

26:23so it's taking a bit of complexion

26:39muscle on the shots of Ruiz anymore

28:45That's the thing, when you get a little bit more fatigue, it's more difficult to slip those jabs and
28:50little tight, short, compact shots. You see how Goodman's having success early in this round.

29:13Gradually towards Ruiz, he tries to find the huge uppercut.

30:41When Goodman lays off the jab, there's less for Ruiz to worry about.
30:45And it's Ruiz who's able to get his hands off more.
30:48The jab is more than a scoring punch there.
30:50It also disengages your opponent's offense a lot of times.

33:06Because physically, you can tell he's already fatigued a little bit.

33:10But now if you mentally fatigue him by continuing to back him up,
33:12continuing to keep him busy, you start to break him a little bit.

33:23But it's a big difference than what he's done before.

35:04ruiz no longer smiling no longer nodding no he had that that confident smirk earlier in the fight
35:08now he's the reality setting in is goodman's consistency is starting to pay dividends
35:15and he's conditioning as well as he tries to find downstairs
35:22just doesn't quite with a strong round though he'll be very happy
35:26with that three minutes and so will his team clearly did hurt robrigo ruiz with a body shot but

48:35but I probably have it slightly edging to Goodman.

48:44He's got that damage around the eye from the left hook.
48:48He's got the cut as well from the clash of heads

48:52And this man he certainly came to fight.

49:03but he certainly had success
49:06and a willingness to succeed early on.

49:15with a lot on the line honestly man.
49:16You know possibly a title fight
49:18on the table for the winner of this fight.
49:21And with a big big fighter then this weight class
49:23with Nakatani and Inoue in a few months
49:25and you put yourself in a good position
49:27if you're in a mandatory spot.
49:29Yeah so the winner of this fight will go to number two.
49:33We do have that undisputed fight as we mentioned
49:36coming out in Oe Inoue and Junta Nakatani.
49:38That is Saturday the 2nd of May.
49:41Number one in the division is Ryosuke Nishida.
