From May 4 this year, people in the UK will only be allowed to vote at polling stations if they have a valid form of photo ID.
People who turn up without ID will be sent away and unable to vote at UK Parliamentary elections, local council elections and referendums in England and police and crime commissioner elections in England and Wales.
This new rule comes after the UK Parliament passed the Elections Act 2022, requiring voters to show valid ID before being handed a ballot paper.
People without a passport or driving license are being urged not to worry, as they can still apply for a Voter Authority Certificate that can be issued with just a digital photograph and National Insurance Number.
This free form of valid documentation will ensure everyone still has access to vote.
