00:00In a significant move, US President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping executive order
00:26aimed at reshaping the country's electoral system.
00:30A key highlight of the order is the proposed mandatory requirement of proof of citizenship
00:35for voter registration in federal elections, a move that could redefine voting rights and
00:41election integrity.
00:42The debate over non-citizen suffrage has been a topic of public discourse since the nation's
00:47founding and this latest measure adds a new chapter to the ongoing conversation on election
00:52reforms.
00:53We have to straighten out our country, we have to straighten out our elections.
00:57Our elections are very dishonest, very corrupt and we have to straighten it out and so easy
01:03to do it and we should go to paper ballots, we should go to one-day voting, we should
01:07go to voter ID and just one other thing, proof of a thing called citizenship in the United
01:13States.
01:14Wouldn't that be nice?
01:15The order also sets a strict deadline for mail-in ballots, requiring that they be received
01:20by election day.
01:22It also mandates that all votes must be cast and received by election day and ties federal
01:27funding to state compliance with this rule.
01:30As it stands, 18 states and Puerto Rico currently accept mailed ballots after election day,
01:36provided they are postmarked on or before the deadline, according to the National Conference
01:40of State Legislatures.
01:43Proof of citizenship, voter ID, one-day voting and paper ballots.
01:47You know, paper ballots are very secure, they have watermark paper, actually it's very intricate
01:52stuff, it's very technologically advanced even though it's paper and you'd have no
01:58trouble, you wouldn't have dishonest elections.
02:01The order also bans voting systems that rely on QR codes or barcodes for vote counting
02:06and prohibits foreign nationals from making certain political donations.
02:10Additionally, states that refuse to cooperate with federal election crime investigations
02:14risk losing federal grants.
02:16With its sweeping measures, the order has the potential to reshape the voting landscape.
02:21Though experts anticipate legal challenges on constitutional grounds.
