03:47I began this series by telling you the story of David, the greatest overcomer in the Old Testament.
04:16And I want to conclude it by pointing you toward the greatest overcomer of all time,
04:21the Lord Jesus Christ, who through death, burial, and resurrection overcame our greatest enemies,
04:29sin, Satan, and death.
04:32Jesus overcame these enemies personally.
04:34He overcame them powerfully.
04:36And most importantly, he overcame them permanently.
04:39And that is the great message of the resurrection.
04:42Those of us who have heard the story of the resurrection all of our lives
04:46may forget how wondrous and joyous and life-changing it is.
04:51But in this message, I ask you to keep the resurrection of Jesus Christ fresh in your mind.
04:57If you want to be an overcomer, you have to start with the overcomer
05:02who overcame death for all of us.
05:05Let's begin where some people want to begin, to disprove the resurrection,
05:12that Jesus Christ truly was dead.
05:17And if you're one of those who struggles with the fear of death, you're not alone.
05:22Venture capitalist Bill Maris is haunted by his father's death from a brain tumor,
05:27and he said,
05:28My thoughts can turn to dark things when I'm alone.
05:30Maris has convinced investors to launch Google's billion-dollar super-secret effort to cure aging.
05:38Peter Thiel, the billionaire behind PayPal and the first outside investor in Facebook,
05:44intends to live to the age of 120.
05:47He told the Washington Post,
05:48I've always had this really strong sense that death was a terrible, terrible thing.
05:52To free us from the fear of death, Jesus, first of all, had to experience death.
06:00Jesus took death in his own body.
06:04His death took six hours.
06:06It was witnessed by thousands.
06:08He didn't simply swoon or lapse into a coma.
06:11He was as dead as dead man can be.
06:15The Roman soldiers confirmed this, as we know,
06:17by inspecting his stiffening corpse on the cross.
06:21They knew death when they saw it.
06:23Jewish officials could not tolerate crucifixion victims hanging on crosses on the Sabbath day.
06:30So they would often break the legs of those who were crucified to hasten their death.
06:35This would prevent the person hanging on a cross from being able to push up with his legs in order to breathe,
06:41and when his legs were broken, he would ultimately die in just a matter of a few moments.
06:46But when the soldiers came to Jesus, if you remember the story in the Gospels,
06:50they did not break his legs.
06:53The prophecy of the Old Testament said not a bone would be broken.
06:57But they didn't break his legs because they saw he was already dead.
07:03Had you been in Jerusalem that day,
07:05you would have seen the Lord's body taken down from the cross,
07:08wrapped tightly in a shroud, and laid in a tomb.
07:12But the good news is that Jesus didn't stay in that tomb,
07:16and there's a whole lot of evidence to prove it.
07:20The historian Luke said that Jesus presented himself alive after suffering by many infallible proofs.
07:26These proofs are so important to us in our culture today,
07:29and if we do not really believe in the resurrection, we cannot be overcomers,
07:33because Jesus is the one who empowers us to overcome through the power
07:37from which he himself was resurrected from the grave.
07:41So I want you to let me be Easter for you a little bit today
07:45and talk about this central doctrine of the Word of God.
07:50Because if we do not understand and believe and really process the power of the resurrection,
07:56we are powerless ourselves to deal with the issues we face.
08:01So if you'd been in Jerusalem that day,
08:03and you had come with the women to the tomb that first morning,
08:07the first thing you would have noticed was the soldiers.
08:11You see, a Roman guard had been assigned to guard the Lord's tomb day and night.
08:17Do you remember that from the Gospels?
08:19And this guard was a security force of 16 soldiers,
08:23each of them trained to protect six feet in front of them.
08:28Four stood immediately in front of what was being protected.
08:31The other 12 slept in a semicircle in front of them,
08:34and every four hours, another four was awakened,
08:38and those who had been awake went to sleep.
08:39So they worked through the night, four on duty, and the others asleep.
08:45To steal the corpse of Jesus,
08:47which is what some people said happened instead of the resurrection,
08:50grave robbers would have had to walk over the sleeping soldiers.
08:53Then get past the alert, well-armed soldiers.
08:56Clearly, the stolen body idea is absurd,
08:59but it was the best spin the Lord's critics could concoct
09:02in the fog of events around his resurrection.
09:05So some people said,
09:05no, he didn't come back from the grave.
09:08He was stolen by his friends.
09:11Just stop and think about that for a moment,
09:13and you have to deal with the soldiers.
09:15And once you have dealt with the soldiers,
09:18you have to deal with the seal.
09:20The seal, according to Matthew 27,
09:23was put over the tomb of Jesus
09:25to secure it officially.
09:29This seal was a cord.
09:30If you've ever seen this in some of the movies of the resurrection,
09:33it was a thin cord that was stretched out across the stone
09:36that was in front of the grave.
09:37It was sealed with wax here.
09:39It was sealed with wax here.
09:41And it was stamped with the official signet
09:44of the Roman governor.
09:45For someone to have stolen Jesus' body,
09:47they would have had to evade the soldiers.
09:50They would have to have broken the seal,
09:52which would have incurred the wrath
09:53of the entire Roman Empire.
09:56Once you get past the soldiers and the seal,
09:59you've got to deal with the stone.
10:02If you'd witnessed the scene,
10:03you'd have noticed the giant stone
10:05that covered the tomb.
10:06I can't tell you how vital this piece of information is.
10:10Matthew 27 says,
10:11When Joseph had taken the body,
10:14he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
10:15and laid it in his new tomb,
10:17which he had hewn out of the rock.
10:19And he rolled a large stone
10:21against the door of the tomb and departed.
10:26Mark's account in the New Testament
10:28says this stone was extremely large.
10:32Now, I don't know how a frightened group of disciples
10:35or a dispirited group of women
10:37could overcome the Roman guards
10:39and roll away the stone,
10:40but critics don't want to deal with that one.
10:43I did a little homework on this stone,
10:46a stone big enough to cover the opening of the tomb.
10:48It weighed over two tons,
10:51which is why when the women were coming to the tomb
10:53on Sunday morning,
10:54they were surprised to find it gone.
10:57Here's what Matthew says,
10:58And behold, there was a great earthquake,
10:59for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven
11:01and came and rolled back the stone from the door
11:04and sat on it.
11:07When the women came that day,
11:08they saw the stone,
11:09but here's what I believe.
11:11The Scripture uses some very special words
11:13that give you the impression
11:14that the stone wasn't even in the slot.
11:16It was over in the field by itself.
11:19So when they came and saw the tomb,
11:22there wasn't any stone in front of the opening.
11:24And the stone wasn't even where it would have been
11:27if it had been rolled back up the slot.
11:29It was in a place by itself.
11:31Somebody said,
11:32Why was the stone rolled away from the tomb?
11:34Not to let Jesus out,
11:36but so that we could see in.
11:39Jesus didn't need us to roll the stone away
11:41for him to get out.
11:41Remember, he was in his new resurrection body.
11:44He could transport himself any place he wanted.
11:47But the stone was rolled away
11:49so everybody could look in
11:50and see that the tomb was empty.
11:54And that brings us to the astonishing discovery
11:57that shook Jerusalem on that history-bending day.
12:01Everyone agrees that the sepulcher was empty.
12:06Paul said this thing wasn't done in a corner.
12:09This was done right in the middle of Jewish population.
12:13Thousands of people in Jerusalem for Passover
12:16could see for themselves
12:17that Joseph of Arimathea's tomb,
12:19so recently occupied by the body of Jesus of Nazareth,
12:22was now vacant.
12:25So as you walk down to the tomb on that first day
12:28and you're trying to find out,
12:30did Jesus really come back from the grave?
12:32You see the seal is gone
12:33and the stone's been moved
12:35and the sepulcher is empty,
12:38but not quite.
12:41The sepulcher was not quite empty.
12:43There was still a shroud in the sepulcher.
12:45In fact, it's a detail that often gets left out
12:49of the resurrection story.
12:51Peter and John heard the rumors of the resurrection
12:53and they ran to the tomb.
12:55And the Bible says when John leaned over
12:57and looked into the grave,
12:58he saw something so startling
12:59that he didn't even enter the tomb.
13:02Where the body of Jesus had been placed,
13:05there were the grave clothes
13:07in the form of a body,
13:08slightly caved in and empty,
13:10like the empty chrysalis of a caterpillar's cocoon.
13:15And seeing that would make a believer out of anybody
13:18because you could tell immediately
13:20that Jesus hadn't unwrapped the grave clothes to get out.
13:24He had come through the grave clothes
13:26and the grave clothes were still there like a body.
13:31And not only that,
13:33the clothes that went around his head,
13:35the Bible says they were in a place by themselves.
13:37In other words, where the head would have been,
13:39here was the head clothing.
13:41I mean, that would really take your breath away,
13:44wouldn't it?
13:47So the soldiers and the seal and the stone
13:49and the sepulcher and the shroud,
13:51and then the scars.
13:53Let's fast forward this story a little bit.
13:56On the evening of that first Easter,
13:58Jesus appeared to his disciples
13:59as they hid behind locked doors
14:01for fear of the Jewish leaders.
14:03When they came to this meeting,
14:05as you remember from your study of the New Testament,
14:07Thomas wasn't in the meeting.
14:09He wasn't there.
14:10And when he heard the reports that Jesus was alive,
14:14Thomas said,
14:16unless I see in his hands the print of the nails
14:19and put my finger into the print of the nails
14:23and put my hand into his side,
14:24I will not believe.
14:26And one week later,
14:29the disciples gathered again,
14:30and this time Thomas was there.
14:32And according to John 20,
14:34Jesus appeared in their midst again,
14:36and he said,
14:37peace to you.
14:38And then he looked at Thomas,
14:40and he said,
14:40Thomas, reach your finger here
14:42and look at my hands,
14:44and reach your hand here
14:45and put it into my side.
14:47Thomas, don't be unbelieving.
14:49Be believing.
14:50And Thomas' response represents
14:53the climax of the Gospel of John.
14:56He said,
14:57my Lord and my God.
15:00My Lord and my God.
15:02The scars of Christ
15:04were still visible
15:05on his risen and glorified body,
15:08and they were indisputable proof
15:10of his identity.
15:12Thomas never doubted again,
15:15and according to our best traditional sources,
15:17he was a missionary who gave his life
15:20for the expansion of the church in India
15:22because of the resurrection.
15:25And then finally,
15:27there were the sightings of Jesus
15:28as a resurrected Lord.
15:30Had you been alive in those days,
15:32you would likely have seen Jesus
15:33as the resurrected Savior.
15:37Acts 1-3 says,
15:38he presented himself alive
15:40after his suffering.
15:41And we know of approximately
15:43a dozen post-resurrection appearances of Jesus
15:46One of those
15:48was to 500 people at the same time.
15:52The variety of his appearances
15:54is one reason why
15:55those who have studied the resurrection
15:57say it's absolutely confirmed.
16:00Now, you say,
16:00Pastor Jeremiah,
16:01thank you for making me think about Easter today
16:04and reminding me of the resurrection.
16:06And it's pretty sad
16:07that in most of our churches,
16:08we never preach on the resurrection
16:09except on Easter weekend.
16:11And it's the cornerstone of our faith.
16:14The resurrection of Jesus Christ
16:15is really in many respects
16:16more important than the death of Christ
16:18for this reason.
16:19If Jesus died,
16:21but he didn't come back from the grave,
16:22we have no reason to believe
16:24that he was any different
16:25than any other martyr who ever died.
16:27But his resurrection
16:29proves that he was who he said he was.
16:32He came back from the grave.
16:34He did exactly what he said he would do.
16:36And because he rose from the grave,
16:38we know for sure
16:39that the gospel is true
16:40and that our faith in Jesus
16:42is not faith in vain.
16:44So, what does that mean to us?
16:47Now that Jesus is resurrected,
16:50the results of life overcoming death
16:54are very interesting.
16:56And I'm so grateful
16:57that I get to finish my time here in New York
17:00by sharing these with you.
17:02Our knowledge of Christ's resurrection
17:04isn't merely an intellectual exercise.
17:07Because he lives,
17:09you can live too.
17:10In the fullest sense of that word,
17:12because he is alive now and forevermore,
17:15he has the authority to give life
17:17eternally and abundantly.
17:19And there are four profound
17:22and highly practical implications
17:24of this truth.
17:25And I want to leave them with you today.
17:28Because Jesus Christ is risen,
17:31you can live a forgiven life.
17:35Before his death on the cross,
17:37Jesus watched his disciples stumble
17:39from one mistake to another,
17:41culminating in their desertion
17:42and denial of him.
17:44But somehow,
17:45all of their failures were swallowed up
17:46in the empty tomb of Christ.
17:48Take Thomas, for instance.
17:50Had he not messed up
17:51and stalked away in bitter unbelief,
17:53we wouldn't have his triumphant exclamation
17:55of the next week.
17:57As I said,
17:58John used those words
17:59as the climactic moment of his gospel.
18:02For Jesus can turn our failures
18:04into acts of faith and faithfulness.
18:07Jesus does that for you and for me
18:09and for those we love.
18:10The Bible uses a wonderful phrase
18:12in Deuteronomy 23, 5.
18:14God turned the curse into a blessing.
18:17And that's what he did on the cross.
18:19That's what he did through his resurrection.
18:21He turned the curse into a blessing.
18:23The life of every Christ follower
18:27is a miracle that comes
18:29from the miracle of the resurrection.
18:31I run into people all the time
18:33and say,
18:33Oh, yeah, I know Pastor Jeremiah.
18:35I know God has forgiven me,
18:36but I can't forgive myself.
18:38And I, first of all,
18:40want to tell them
18:40there's no place in the Bible
18:41that I've ever been able to find
18:43where we're told to forgive ourselves
18:44just for whatever it's worth.
18:45And secondly,
18:47if we could forgive ourselves
18:48and we put our forgiveness of ourselves
18:52up against God's forgiveness of us,
18:54which one would you choose?
18:56So if God has forgiven you,
18:58you need to quit worrying
18:59about forgiving yourself.
19:00You've already been forgiven
19:01by the most powerful God
19:02who's forgiven you of your sins.
19:04So don't be,
19:06don't,
19:06don't spend all your life
19:08beating yourself up over sins
19:10that God has already forgiven.
19:13Accept his forgiveness.
19:15And get on with your life.
19:18Because Jesus Christ
19:20came out of the grave,
19:22you and I can live a forgiven life.
19:25He who has overcome the world
19:27believes in the Son of God.
19:29Number two,
19:31because he is risen,
19:33we get to live a meaningful life.
19:36This was the primary point
19:37driven home by the Apostle Paul
19:39in his great chapter
19:40on the resurrection.
19:42If you read 1 Corinthians 15,
19:44this is what he said.
19:46He said,
19:47therefore, my beloved brethren,
19:48be steadfast,
19:49unmovable,
19:51always abounding
19:52in the work of the Lord,
19:53knowing that your labor
19:54is not in vain in the Lord.
19:56You know what the resurrection does
19:57for those of us who are Christians?
19:58It gives meaning to our lives.
20:00The reason I preach,
20:01the reason I do what I do
20:02and travel
20:03and do all this stuff
20:04on television
20:04and on radio
20:05is because I believe
20:06the resurrection of Jesus Christ
20:08is the most important truth
20:10in the whole world.
20:11And that when we preach that
20:12and people believe it,
20:13it not only changes their life
20:15here on this earth,
20:16but it gets them to heaven,
20:17which is what our whole purpose is.
20:19So if you believe
20:20in the resurrection
20:21and you've accepted Jesus Christ
20:23as your Savior,
20:24you have meaning immediately.
20:26You know what it is?
20:27Tell somebody about it.
20:29Let them know
20:30that Jesus Christ
20:31can make a difference
20:32in your life.
20:35Thirdly,
20:35because he is risen,
20:36you can live a powerful life.
20:38Jesus' resurrection
20:40was a display
20:41of unimaginable power,
20:44power that the Bible says
20:47is available to us
20:49in our world today.
20:51That's the core message
20:52of the book of Ephesians.
20:54The beaming light
20:55of the empty tomb
20:56illuminates every sentence
20:58and word
20:59in Paul's letter to Ephesians.
21:01Listen to this paragraph.
21:02I pray that the eyes
21:04of your heart
21:05may be enlightened
21:05in order that you may know
21:07the hope to which
21:08he has called you,
21:09the riches of his glorious
21:11inheritance in his holy people
21:13and his incomparably
21:14great power
21:15for us who believe.
21:16That power,
21:17listen to this,
21:18is the same mighty strength
21:20he exerted
21:21when he raised Christ
21:23from the dead.
21:24The power that raised Jesus
21:26from the grave
21:27is the same power you have
21:29in your life as a Christian.
21:30If you're not using it,
21:31you don't know it,
21:32but it's there
21:33and the Bible says
21:34it's available.
21:35And then,
21:37because he is risen,
21:38you can live
21:38a never-ending life.
21:411 Corinthians 15, 20 says,
21:44Christ is risen from the dead
21:45and has become
21:46the firstfruits
21:47of those who have
21:48fallen asleep.
21:49Our Lord's resurrection,
21:51men and women,
21:52is the guarantee
21:52that when you put
21:54your trust in him,
21:56just as he was resurrected
21:57from the grave,
21:58you too will be resurrected
22:00from the grave.
22:01When the Bible says
22:02he was the firstfruits,
22:04that means he's
22:04the down payment.
22:06Jesus is the down payment
22:07on all future resurrections.
22:10John 11 says,
22:11I am the resurrection
22:12and the life.
22:14He who believes in me,
22:15though he may die,
22:16he shall live.
22:18And whoever lives
22:19and believes in me
22:20shall never die.
22:21Do you believe this?
22:22Yes.
22:23Jesus triumphed over death.
22:26He will triumph over evil.
22:28You can have certain hope
22:29concerning the future.
22:30And as a pastor,
22:32having presided over
22:34many funerals,
22:35I can tell you
22:36there is a creative difference
22:38when the person
22:39who has died
22:40is a believer.
22:42I can't overcome
22:43the things of my life
22:44in my own power,
22:45but I have a risen Christ
22:47and he lives within my heart.
22:49And when I have things
22:50I don't know how to deal with,
22:51I just take them to him
22:53and I tell it to Jesus
22:55as the old hymn writes.
22:56And I know that the Jesus
22:58who lives within me
22:59is the same Jesus
23:00who was crucified that Friday
23:02and the same Jesus
23:03who came out of the grave
23:04on that Sunday
23:05and nothing is impossible with him.
23:07If he can overcome the grave,
23:09he can overcome
23:09whatever we face,
23:11whatever we deal with,
23:12whatever comes across our path.
23:20Jesus,
23:21he's the greatest overcomer,
23:23whoever overcame.
23:24and I hope you know him,
23:27but if you don't know him,
23:29I recommend him to you.
23:31And I promise you
23:32whatever it is
23:33you got going on in your life
23:34that's overwhelming you right now,
23:37you put Jesus in the equation
23:38and he'll make all the difference
23:40in the world.
23:42I've trusted him now
23:43and walked with him now
23:44for over 50 years.
23:46He's never disappointed me.
23:48He never out promises himself.
23:50Whatever he says he will do,
23:51he does.
23:52And you can count on him.
23:54Jesus is enough
23:56and I hope you know him
23:58and I hope you know
24:00as you leave here today
24:01that the most important message
24:02I have
24:03about all the stuff
24:04we've talked about
24:04is the message of Jesus.
24:06Jesus Christ,
24:08the Savior of the world.
24:10Hallelujah.

27:21If you take
27:22all of these issues
27:23that we're dealing with
27:24and you trace them,
27:25they have a hook
27:26in the future.
27:27God says,
27:28this is what's going
27:29to happen.
27:29And there's an old adage
27:31when you study prophecy
27:32that says future events
27:33cast their shadows
27:34before them.
27:36In other words,
27:36if there's an event
27:37out there that's going
27:38to happen,
27:38it's not just going
27:39to pop on you one day,
27:40it's going to cast
27:41its shadow before us.
27:42We're living in those
27:43shadows right now.
