Government commits to strengthening cultural heritage laws after Juukan Gorge destruction

The federal government has accepted seven of the eight recommendations put forward by an inquiry into the destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters in Western Australia. In May 2020, mining giant Rio Tinto destroyed two 46,000-year-old rock shelters in the Pilbara region, despite traditional owners warning of the site's cultural significance.
