00:02It's the morning routine that's ruining the planet.
00:05It's just sort of standard practice for everyone to pick up their morning coffee and drink it for five seconds
00:12and then chuck it away.
00:13The state goes through 800 million single-use coffee cups a year.
00:17I grew up in an era with no plastics barred at all, so to me this was all very new
00:23and very disturbing.
00:24Plastic thrown out on land is filling the ocean.
00:27I noticed it on the beach at Lord Howe Island. I walked along the beach and I picked up, I
00:33can't remember now, it was about 60 or 70 pieces in about 10 minutes.
00:37From 2028, cafes will be banned from serving coffee in takeaway cups that are not recyclable.
00:43You can still have your cup, but it actually needs to be able to go into the yellow bin.
00:47This cafe owner in the city says the recyclable kind can be hard to come by.
00:51Some supplies, they have their items, the recyclable, but they're a little bit more expensive and not many supplies they
01:03have at the moment I guess.
01:04If a customer brings a keep cup, the cafe will be forced to use it unless it's dirty.
01:09Takeaway businesses must offer a reusable cup as part of a scheme, although the government is promising a carve out
01:15for small operators.
01:16This is a huge impost on small business. They're already doing it very, very tough at the moment.
01:21These reforms are fundamentally about keeping plastic out of waterways.
01:25The state's environmental regulator predicts that without action, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050.
01:32It gets eaten by turtles.
01:34This one is actually a balloon.
01:36That's filled up their entire stomach, and that will kill them. They just starve to death.
01:41The deliberate release of helium balloons is being outlawed, as are these soy sauce fish containers.
01:47And we have actually had one of those little fish ingested. It's possibly not the right type of fish to
01:53be in the ocean.
01:54Remnants of a sushi lunch that'll long outlive whoever ate it.
01:59They do not have to even see them as overload.
