Shinichi brought Mouri and the others with him to investigate the big guy, after Agasa Hakase encourages him not to move alone recklessly. As they managed to track down the guy in a hotel room, they open the room just to see the guy is already dead by poisoning. Shinichi found a lot of empty duralumin cases in there, and later figured out Hirota Kenzou was single and never had a daughter. So Hirota Masami, the one they try to save probably the mastermind in this case.
