Research Shows an Hour of Activity Every Week Can Help Prevent Disability

Losing the ability to perform
everyday physical activities
can not only lead to a loss of
independence but can also be deadly. Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis
that occurs over time due to age
and the excessive use of joints. It impacts more than
30 million Americans,
with more than half of them
being under the age of 65. A new study by the 'American Journal
of Preventive Medicine' looked at
participants with knee osteoarthritis
and their increased risk of disability. Dorothy D. Dunlop, lead author
of the study, observed how
consistent exercise affected the
development of osteoarthritis. She discovered that 56 minutes
of moderate to vigorous exercise
per week led to an 86% decreased
risk of being mobility-disabled.
