July 18, 1936: General Francisco Franco attempted a coup that would lead to the Spanish Civil War. Thousands of international volunteers responded, traveling to Spain to defend the democratically-elected leftist government against the fascist forces of general Francisco Franco. They were known as the International Brigades.
