High and increasing prices in Honduras have driven down meat consumption by 40% in the past five years, according to an investigation by the central bank. Meat is currently selling for almost US$5 a pound in supermarkets, which puts it out of the reach for the impoverished majority. A third of the population eats meat less than three times a week.
