A new prime minister of Haiti has taken office after weeks of unrest from protesters demanding long-overdue elections.
President Michel Martelly, who is ruling by decree after dissolving parliament, nominated Evans Paul for the PM position.
But Martelly’s opponents accuse him of abuse of power and aspiring to rule by decree.
“Today, Martelly is the president, Martelly is prime minister, Martelly is a director general, Martelly is a senator, Martelly is a deputy, Martelly is a local official,” said opposition leader Andre Fado. “In a democratic state, no one would tolerate this.”
Paul expects a new electoral council will be appointed within weeks and elections to be held this year.
