KENYANS CALL ON WOMEN TO DRESS "DECENTLY" As we can see from these images doing the rounds on social networks, thousands of Kenyans took to the streets of Nairobi on Monday November 17 denouncing violence against women in Kenya. The demonstration was prompted by an attack on a young woman early November who was pushed, pulled and stripped in public by a group of men because she was wearing a mini skirt, and they decided that was an inappropriate way to dress. Footage of the attack was posted online and widely shared. People have been campaigning for the victim ever since, but the movement is being met with some online opposition. Some web users in Kenya, the vast majority of them men, have criticized Monday`s rally; They say the woman assaulted and humiliated at the beginning of the month had dressed provocatively and shouldn`t be surprised by the reaction from passers-by. They have taken to social networks posting under the #NudityIsNotMyChoice hashtag, slamming the way some women dress in Kenya and urging them to cover up in public. The key words reject the #MyDressMyChoice Twitter hashtag started a few days earlier by women's rights campaigners across the country. The hashtag had been proving very popular on social networks, with web users saying Kenyan women should be able to dress as they see fit, without having to worry about what men might think … or do.
