By day the sunlight on you makes a diamond wand
a glittering finger pointing upwards in the sky
reflecting an almost unbearable light
At night a vertical stream shoots like a fountain
glimmering in the darkness
pushing through velvet night to reach the stars.
Today the sky is weighted grey and dense
through looming mists and clouds you peep out
tantalizingly here and again not here
With what end have we built you
achievement, pride, because we can?
a man-made stalagmite, reaching for infinity
pushing your way into the universe
our souls' escape
from this diminished world?
