Christian Maurer is rapidly closing in on victory in the Red Bull X-Alps 2013.

He is almost 300 kilometres ahead of fellow Frenchman Clement Latour. SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/EDGEsport

If you're expecting Julie Andrews, then you're watching the wrong film.

It may look like the opening to the Sound of Music.

But don't be put off by the beautiful Alpine scenery of Switzerland.

Away from the tourists, hardier souls are trying to safely negotiate the Red Bull X-Alps 2013.

Athletes must race from Salzburg to Monaco, by foot or paraglider, a straight-line distance of around 1,000 kilometres.

Way out in front, Frenchman Christian Maurer is closing in on the finish.

Meanwhile nearly 300 kilometres back, we switch from the Sound of Music to the Great Escape, as fellow Frenchman Clement Latour, who's lying in second, hikes his way southwards towards the Matterhorn....with his knapsack clearly on his back.

Yodeling optional.

It's a French one-two-three at present, with Antoine Girard back in third.

And then finally, a plucky Brit.

Jon Chambers lying in fourth.

After a quick lunch, he has to quite literally throw himself off a mountain.

Taking in the spectacular views as he glides south-east towards Interlaken.

Signing in, just to prove he's been there.

And very soon, hopefully, an end to the pain endured on the sixth running of this event.
