WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ABOUT: At the age of 25, I went through a very dark moment. Everything was going good. Great. And, then just like that, everything changed. As a way to move forward from that instance, I developed a series of works that captured the quintessence of that pain and my struggle to define “self”. Each work tells a small instance of what happened and collectively they narrate the entire story.
Through Photography, Film and Mixed Media, I want to investigate how our systems of oppression--be it social stratification, race or gender--cultivates one’s understanding of self. Is it possible to operate outside our society’s constructed social norms? What would these images look like? What would my experience look like on camera?
I believe that Individuality is an aberration and without our social constructs-race, gender or classism-we have no sense of self. Ultimately I would like my images to ask, “to what credit do we give the individual?”
Some of the highlights from this project are She Fell From Normalcy; a 16mm experimental short about one girl’s fall from grace and venture into the wild. Following that is The Manuscript; a series of journal entries and notes documenting my life’s experiences over the past 3 years. These entries will be formatted in braille and turned it into a piece of art for the public’s disposal. Lastly, there is Within-A Shadow of Self; a photo-series that juxtaposes modern day examples of our society’s social constructs against subject matter devoid of it’s social weight.
With your help, I would like to present these works in my first solo show as an exhibiting fine artist. To produce this project I need to raise $5000. Donate today! There are a host of incentives that I am providing folks who can help bring this idea to fruition. Share this on your facebook! Retweet this to your friends and colleagues. Anything that you can do to help would make a tremendous impact on this project’s success.
RISK AND CHALLENGES: Like many projects, the final look that I have set out to achieve during preproduction, may not necessarily be the visual that unfolds in post. It may be even better! I may find another way to better narrate my message and story to the greater public. As a supporter of this project, understand that this project may evolve in lots of different ways and the final outcome may look different from what you expected.
