I grew up on Delaware Avenue in the Highlands neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware. A few blocks away is Rockford Park, with rolling hills, playing fields, tennis courts, a popular dog park and the landmark Rockford Tower, a granite exterior water tower. The land was originally owned by William P. Bancroft, who donated the land to the City.
Rockford Tower overlooks Wilmington to the east and the Brandywine River and Montchanin to the west. The park was designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, famous for designing Central Park in Manhattan. The Statue is of Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont.
Rockford Park was where we played endless pickup games of baseball, rode bikes, climbed trees and hiked down the hills to the Brandywine, all before video games and organized and uniformed, parent-directed sports were in vogue. This week Rockford Park will host the Annual Flower Market, a traditional event preceding Mother's Day. While home in Delaware, I had a chance to take some pictures and fly a bit to capture the open green space.
