Who are the Turkic peoples, and why are there so many Turkic people in Russia?
From the Tatars and Bashkirs of the Volga region to the Tuvans of Siberia and the Sakha (Yakuts) of the Arctic, Russia is home to a remarkable variety of Turkic ethnic groups.
In this episode of You Know NOTHING About Russia!, we explore the origins of the Turkic peoples, the history of the Turkic Khaganate, the Golden Horde, and the expansion of Russia across Eurasia. Through historical maps and a Turkic languages comparison, we'll discover how different ethnic groups of Russia became part of the same country.
We'll also explore:
- The difference between Turkic and Turkish
- The history of Turkic peoples before modern Russia
- Tatars, Bashkirs, Chuvash, Tuvans and Sakha
- Turkic languages and how closely they're related
- Why Turkic peoples have different religions and cultures
- The Turkic ethnic groups missing from Russia's political map
**A quick note about the North Caucasus:**
Sorry I didn't get to properly cover the Turkic peoples of Russia's North Caucasus in this video, including the Kumyks, Karachays, Balkars and Nogais.
I'm planning a separate, more detailed episode about the peoples of the Russian North Caucasus, where we'll explore not only these Turkic groups but also the many other ethnic groups, languages, cultures and histories that make this region so diverse.
