The Seven-Year-Old Obsession Most kids are playing with blocks at age seven; Warren Buffett was reading every investment book in the public library. But despite his early start and voracious appetite for knowledge, something was missing. He knew what "everyone else" thought, but he didn't have a framework that actually worked—until he turned 19.
The Benjamin Graham Turning Point The real shift happened at Columbia University. Finding The Intelligent Investor wasn't just a casual read; it was a life-altering moment that provided the logical foundation for a multi-billion dollar career. This description of "The Intelligent Investor" as the first thing that actually "made sense" is a powerful testament to the importance of finding the right mentor—even if that mentor is found in a bookstore in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Logic vs. Noise
This video captures the essence of value investing: filtering out the noise of the crowd and sticking to a philosophy that is grounded in reality. It’s a masterclass in why an early start, combined with the right intellectual framework, is the ultimate recipe for unprecedented success.
Transcript: Well, a book did change my life and it was by a fellow who taught here at Columbia, Benjamin Graham. I read the book when I was 19 called The Intelligent Investor. I had been interested in investment since I was maybe seven or eight and I'd read every book in my public library. Why do you think I was interested in investing when I was seven or eight? Because I was too dumb to get interested at four! My dad had a very small investment firm and I would just get out and I read all the books that he had there waiting to go to lunch or whatever it might be. And then I went to the public library and read them all and it just was a fascinating subject to me, but I didn't have any... I knew what everybody thought and all of that at an early age, but what Graham wrote made sense. I just happened to pick that book up at a bookstore in Lincoln.
