00:12Kids, let's first see, what is adaptation?

00:16Special characteristics of plants and animals that enable them to live in a particular environment are termed as adaptation.

00:28In addition, there are various types of adaptations.

00:34Let's learn about a few of them.

00:38Camouflage.

00:40Survival can become a challenging task in the wild, especially if you're smaller or slower than the possible predators.

00:52This is why many animal species have developed different ways to camouflage, that is, blending itself with the environment.

01:02This enables the animal to hide from predators and also to catch up its prey.

01:09Have a look at some examples.

01:13This is a stick insect.

01:16It completely blends with its environment.

01:20That is, it looks like a stick itself.

01:24This way it can hide from its predators and can catch its preys without making its preys getting to know of its presence.

01:35Now let's see more examples of camouflage.

01:39This is an owl.

01:42It completely blends itself with the trunk of a tree.

01:47This is a caterpillar.

01:49It camouflages itself on the leaves.

01:54Here we have another example of camouflage.

01:58It's hard to find this toad in these leaves.

02:05So this is the way this toad hides itself from its predators and can also catch its prey.

02:15Here is a small seahorse.

02:18It camouflages itself in aquatic plants.

02:23Here is another insect camouflaging itself as a leaf.

02:28Now let's learn another type of adaptation in animals.

02:33It is hibernation.

02:36Some animals hibernate, that is, go into deep sleep so they can survive throughout the cold season.

02:45When the weather is freezing and the food is scarce.

02:50Hibernation truly is a clever survival mechanism.

02:56Now let's see some animals that can hibernate.

03:00Wood frogs.

03:03Common poorwills.

03:07Ground squirrels.

03:10Hamsters.

03:12Bats.

03:14Bears.

03:16Garter snakes.

03:18And snails are some animals that hibernate.

03:23Now let's see another way of adaptation.

03:29Migration.

03:33Animals travel a long way from one place to another for the sake of better weather or breeding or better food.

03:45Animal migration is the traveling of long distances in search of new habitat.

03:53It can be for breeding, it can be for feeding, or it can be for better environments or climates.

04:01The trigger for the migration may be local climate, local availability of food, or the season of the year.

04:11Bird migration is regular seasonal journeys undertaken by many species of birds.

04:20Bird movement include those made in response to changes in food availability, habitat, or weather.

04:30Now let's learn some fun facts about the migrating animals.

04:37The whale that migrates the longest is the gray whale, which migrates about 12,500 miles.

04:47The insect that migrates the longest is the desert locust, which travels about 2,800 miles.

04:57The butterfly that migrates the longest is a monarch butterfly. It migrates up to 2,000 miles.

05:07The land animals that migrates the longest is the caribou, which travels about 700 miles.

05:16Now let's learn about some animals that migrate.

05:21The Canadian geese fly north every spring to enjoy the long, sunny days and fly south every fall to find warm weather and food.

05:35Here are some more examples.

05:38African elephant. It migrates to find food during the wet and dry seasons.

05:46Bats. Bats are the only flying mammal. Some bats, like the geese, migrate.

05:57Many birds, like the bobolink, the arctic tern, migrate.

06:04Crab. A crab is an animal with a shell. Many crabs migrate to reproduce.

06:13Gray whale. A baleen whale, that is a bottom feeder, migrates long distances.
