00:00Hi kids, today we will learn about the process by which green plants make their own food.
00:08So let's start.
00:11Plants are the only living things that produce their own food.
00:16We humans get our food from plants or animals.
00:22Animals get their food from plants or other animals.
00:27But plants are the living organisms that make their own food and are called producers.
00:35And all the other living beings are consumers.
00:39Let's see how these plants prepare their own food.
00:44The process by which plants make their own food is called photosynthesis.
00:50Let's learn it.
00:53Most of the plants absorb water from soil that already has many dissolved minerals and
00:59salts in it.
01:00This water with dissolved minerals and salts moves up to the stem.
01:06Stem has veins for moving water up the plant to every branch and leaf of plant.
01:15Leaf Yes, leaf is the part of the plant where food
01:19for the plant is prepared.
01:21And the process by which food is prepared by plants is called photosynthesis.
01:28Let's learn about it more.
01:31The way we need ingredients to make any food, same way plants need some ingredients to make
01:38their food.
01:39What do we need to prepare food?
01:43We need fruits or vegetables, oils and spices.
01:47To make our food, we also need energy in the form of heat.
01:54It can be an oven, it can be a gas stove.
01:59Similarly, plants require water, nutrients, carbon dioxide and presence of chlorophyll.
02:08And also some energy that is sunlight to prepare their food.
02:13Now let's learn about each ingredient the plants need to prepare their food.
02:19First is the sunlight.
02:22It is the energy.
02:24Leaves get this energy during the daytime.
02:27From sunlight, leaves always face towards the sun so as to receive maximum sunlight.
02:36Two, water and nutrients.
02:39Plants get water and nutrients from the soil.
02:43Roots absorb the water and nutrients from the soil and the stem transports this water,
02:52salts and minerals to every part of the plant through veins inside the stem.
02:58Then is the carbon dioxide.
03:02Leaves get carbon dioxide from the surrounding air and it enters the leaves through the small
03:08openings in leaves called stoma or stomata.
03:14Stomata are very small structures on the outer surface of a leaf.
03:20They consist of two specialized cells called guard cells that surround a tiny pore called
03:28a stoma.
03:30Next ingredient is the chlorophyll.
03:33It is a green pigment which is present in the leaves.
03:37And this green pigment, chlorophyll, helps the plant to trap the sunlight.
03:43So kids, these are the ingredients required by the green plants or leaves to make their
03:50food and the process is called photosynthesis.
03:54The process is written as carbon dioxide plus water and minerals in the presence of sunlight
04:01and chlorophyll.
04:03It forms glucose, water and oxygen.
04:09This prepared food is stored in various forms.
04:12In the form of fruits, in the form of vegetables, in the form of different parts of plants that
04:20we can eat.
04:21So in this process, plants use carbon dioxide, water, minerals in the presence of sunlight
04:29and chlorophyll to make glucose which is stored as eatable parts of the plant and also release
04:36some water in the form of water vapors and oxygen in the air.
04:43All fruits, vegetables and different parts of the plant that we eat are prepared by plants
04:50with the process of photosynthesis.

05:01All animals and humans need plants for their food and also for breathing as plants provide
05:08oxygen which all living things need to breathe.
05:13But plants too need animals and humans.
05:17Let's see how.
05:20All plants need carbon dioxide to breathe in like we need oxygen to breathe in and carbon
05:28dioxide is provided to plants by all animals and humans as we breathe in oxygen and give
05:36out carbon dioxide and this carbon dioxide is used by plants.
05:43Also, animals help to spread the seed of plants and trees as animals eat fruits and vegetables
05:51and throw away their seeds at distant places and new plants grow at those places.
05:59Also seeds of plants get attached to the skin of animals and as these animals move, seeds
06:05reach different locations and thus it helps in growth of new plants.
06:12So animals provide carbon dioxide to plants.
06:17Plants provide oxygen to animals.
06:21Plants provide food to animals.
06:24And animals help to grow more plants.
06:27So kids, today we learned how plants prepare their own food and how animals and plants
06:34are interdependent on each other.
