Hi kids, today we will learn about the process by which green plants make their own food.
00:08
So let's start.
00:11
Plants are the only living things that produce their own food.
00:16
We humans get our food from plants or animals.
00:22
Animals get their food from plants or other animals.
00:27
But plants are the living organisms that make their own food and are called producers.
00:35
And all the other living beings are consumers.
00:39
Let's see how these plants prepare their own food.
00:44
The process by which plants make their own food is called photosynthesis.
00:50
Let's learn it.
00:53
Most of the plants absorb water from soil that already has many dissolved minerals and
00:59
salts in it.
01:00
This water with dissolved minerals and salts moves up to the stem.
01:06
Stem has veins for moving water up the plant to every branch and leaf of plant.
01:15
Leaf Yes, leaf is the part of the plant where food
01:19
for the plant is prepared.
01:21
And the process by which food is prepared by plants is called photosynthesis.
01:28
Let's learn about it more.
01:31
The way we need ingredients to make any food, same way plants need some ingredients to make
01:38
their food.
01:39
What do we need to prepare food?
01:43
We need fruits or vegetables, oils and spices.
01:47
To make our food, we also need energy in the form of heat.
01:54
It can be an oven, it can be a gas stove.
01:59
Similarly, plants require water, nutrients, carbon dioxide and presence of chlorophyll.
02:08
And also some energy that is sunlight to prepare their food.
02:13
Now let's learn about each ingredient the plants need to prepare their food.
02:19
First is the sunlight.
02:22
It is the energy.
02:24
Leaves get this energy during the daytime.
02:27
From sunlight, leaves always face towards the sun so as to receive maximum sunlight.
02:36
Two, water and nutrients.
02:39
Plants get water and nutrients from the soil.
02:43
Roots absorb the water and nutrients from the soil and the stem transports this water,
02:52
salts and minerals to every part of the plant through veins inside the stem.
02:58
Then is the carbon dioxide.
03:02
Leaves get carbon dioxide from the surrounding air and it enters the leaves through the small
03:08
openings in leaves called stoma or stomata.
03:14
Stomata are very small structures on the outer surface of a leaf.
03:20
They consist of two specialized cells called guard cells that surround a tiny pore called
03:28
a stoma.
03:30
Next ingredient is the chlorophyll.
03:33
It is a green pigment which is present in the leaves.
03:37
And this green pigment, chlorophyll, helps the plant to trap the sunlight.
03:43
So kids, these are the ingredients required by the green plants or leaves to make their
03:50
food and the process is called photosynthesis.
03:54
The process is written as carbon dioxide plus water and minerals in the presence of sunlight
04:01
and chlorophyll.
04:03
It forms glucose, water and oxygen.
04:09
This prepared food is stored in various forms.
04:12
In the form of fruits, in the form of vegetables, in the form of different parts of plants that
04:20
we can eat.
04:21
So in this process, plants use carbon dioxide, water, minerals in the presence of sunlight
04:29
and chlorophyll to make glucose which is stored as eatable parts of the plant and also release
04:36
some water in the form of water vapors and oxygen in the air.
04:43
All fruits, vegetables and different parts of the plant that we eat are prepared by plants
04:50
with the process of photosynthesis.
04:52
Kids, do you know plants and animals are dependent on each other?
04:59
Let's see how.
05:01
All animals and humans need plants for their food and also for breathing as plants provide
05:08
oxygen which all living things need to breathe.
05:13
But plants too need animals and humans.
05:17
Let's see how.
05:20
All plants need carbon dioxide to breathe in like we need oxygen to breathe in and carbon
05:28
dioxide is provided to plants by all animals and humans as we breathe in oxygen and give
05:36
out carbon dioxide and this carbon dioxide is used by plants.
05:43
Also, animals help to spread the seed of plants and trees as animals eat fruits and vegetables
05:51
and throw away their seeds at distant places and new plants grow at those places.
05:59
Also seeds of plants get attached to the skin of animals and as these animals move, seeds
06:05
reach different locations and thus it helps in growth of new plants.
06:12
So animals provide carbon dioxide to plants.
06:17
Plants provide oxygen to animals.
06:21
Plants provide food to animals.
06:24
And animals help to grow more plants.
06:27
So kids, today we learned how plants prepare their own food and how animals and plants
06:34
are interdependent on each other.
06:37
Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
06:41
Bye bye.
