Marvel's oldest mutant built an entire worldview around one brutal idea: only the strong survive. This video essay breaks down the philosophy of Apocalypse — where it comes from, why it echoes real history, and why it's more relevant today than Marvel probably intended. 00:02The 90s had no shortage of villains, from the Joker, who wanted to watch Gotham City burn to
00:09Shredder, who wanted to crush the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But then someone appeared who
00:15declared that peace was a disease. For him, suffering wasn't something bad, but something
00:20necessary. Apocalypse wasn't just another villain. He was the antagonist who wanted to correct an
00:26entire species. Rather than recounting his birth or fun facts, today we're going to analyze him and
00:33ask ourselves, what if his logic isn't just the rambling of another madman? What if this being
00:40who preaches survival of the fittest isn't actually wrong, but simply saw something the rest of us
00:45refuse to see? My name is Atrellus, and welcome to the channel. Without further ado, let's begin.
00:52Saba Nur was born in ancient Egypt about 5,000 years ago, a child with gray skin and blue lips.
01:00His own people, the inhabitants of a place called Aqaba, saw him and immediately thought he was a
01:05demon. They abandoned him in the sand for the sun to kill him, an infant left out in the open
01:10because
01:11his face didn't look like theirs. And this is where Baal enters, the leader of a band of nomadic raiders
01:18that the comics call the sandstormers. These thieves survive by stealing and killing, and their leader
01:25looks at him. And unlike everyone else, he doesn't see a monster. He sees someone with enormous potential,
01:31someone with power. And right there, he christens him in Saba Nur, the first one. Baal raises him under
01:38a single law, the only law this band knows, the strong survive. The one who endures hunger, the blows,
01:45the one who doesn't break. That one deserves to live. The rest is discard. He learns that life is
01:51earned through fighting. In the 1996 comic, Rise of Apocalypse, we see the tribe's initiation rite.
01:58And Saba Nur kills several armed warriors with his bare hands, then asks Baal why they hate him so much,
02:05since he's an outcast even among nomads. Baal gives him an answer that will stay with him forever.
02:11They're afraid because they're weak and stupid. That's the seed of everything.
02:16And Saba Nur was rejected from day one. And he was raised by a murderer who drilled into his head
02:22that that rejection was proof of his superiority. And this gets even more twisted afterwards.
02:28Because Egypt at that time was ruled by Rama Tut, who, let's be clear, wasn't an Egyptian but a time
02:35traveler from the future. A guy who in Marvel ends up being Kang the Conqueror. He comes from the past
02:41looking for him because he knows what he'll become. The most powerful being on the planet.
02:47And wants him as his heir. So Rama Tut sends his army to destroy Baal's tribe, wiping out the only
02:53family he ever had. Baal dies. But before he does, he tells him he's destined for something greater.
03:00And the place where Baal dies changes everything that follows. The two of them are trapped underground
03:06in a cave. And there, Nsaba Nur finds the first traces of ultra-advanced technology, a power that
03:13completely exceeds him. It's his first contact with a strange science, which he uses to survive
03:19and begin understanding that the universe is, is much bigger and more complex than he ever imagined.
03:25But the real breaking point comes later, when he infiltrates the pharaoh's city disguised as a
03:31slave. There he meets Nefri, the sister of Ozymandias, the pharaoh's general. Nsaba Nur falls in love
03:39with her. He feels that for the first time someone sees him as an equal. But when she truly sees
03:44him,
03:45with his gray skin and blue lips, she is disgusted and rejects him. That contempt is the straw that
03:51breaks the camel's back. The accumulated anger and pain of an entire lifetime ignite the spark of
03:57mutation. His powers erupt completely, and Nsaba Nur transforms into Apocalypse. The blue armor we all
04:04know, the modifications that turn him into a god, the living ship, none of that was in that cave.
04:11That all comes much later, because Apocalypse discovers he doesn't age, that he's practically
04:17immortal, and he spends centuries walking the world. On this journey, he stumbles upon the remains of a
04:22gigantic celestial ship, space gods who seeded mutation on Earth. By merging with that cosmic
04:29technology, Apocalypse understands something that will haunt him forever. The celestials come back.
04:36They come back every so often to judge species, and if they find a weak, soft, or stagnant humanity,
04:42they wipe it off the face of the Earth and move on. This rewires his brain, and he believes he's
04:49preparing Earth for a cosmic judgment. He believes that if he cleans out the weak and hardens the strong,
04:55the species will survive when the gods come down to judge. In his mind, he isn't the one bringing the
05:01end of the world. For him, he's the only one trying to prevent it. From that point on, after merging
05:08with
05:08that cosmic technology, he can reorganize his own matter molecule by molecule, change size,
05:14generate new powers at will. He stops being a strong man and becomes something humanity will
05:20mistake for a deity. For centuries, he will pose as a god in various civilizations. Being indestructible,
05:27he sees mortals as fragile and disposable. That doctrine of survival of the fittest has now become
05:32his very flesh. In fact, his first major practical act was revenge. Right there in Egypt, he grabbed
05:40Ozymandias, the general who had humiliated him and, using the underground ship's technology,
05:46transformed him into a being of living stone. A blind seer condemned to serve him forever as his
05:52scribe. The one who despised him for his face became his eternal slave. The weak became property of
05:59the strong. His philosophy applied 100%. This villain stands apart from all the others.
06:05One whose every rejection forged a monster until he became the judge of humanity. Now that we know
06:12where he comes from, we can better understand his hatred of Charles Xavier. It's the hatred of two men
06:18who look at the exact same problem and arrive at opposite conclusions. Charles has a school, a nice
06:24mansion where mutants learn to coexist, control their powers, and integrate into a world that fears and
06:32hates them. There's hope there, utopia. But Apocalypse looks at that school and feels only nausea. For him,
06:39that mansion is a lie. A place where the most powerful beings to ever walk the earth are tamed,
06:44domesticated, taught to ask permission to exist. The X-Men to Apocalypse are spoiled children playing
06:52at being heroes, while the real universe out there is a butcher shop. And this is the heart of this
06:57analysis. Because Apocalypse considers peace a disease. He believes that when a species settles down,
07:04stops fighting, stops suffering, it stagnates, doesn't evolve, and eventually rots. As extreme as that
07:11sounds, there's a twisted consistency to it. Evolution was never very kind. Nature doesn't reward the good.
07:18It rewards the one who adapts, endures, and survives. Suffering, in Apocalypse's mind, is the engine.
07:25Remove suffering from a species, and it dies. Pure social Darwinism taken to its extreme. What he was
07:32taught as a child, he applies as a universal law. And let's not forget the Celestials. That's real law,
07:38real for Apocalypse. He believes there's a clock ticking, that the gods will come down to judge,
07:44and that a weak world won't pass the test. That's why he has all the urgency in the world. That's
07:50why
07:50he also despises the Professor. Not because he's weak, but because, having the power to change the
07:56world, he chooses the path of mercy. And for Apocalypse, mercy is betrayal of evolution. And this,
08:02people, is what makes him the great villain. He doesn't want to destroy the world just because
08:09he wants to destroy it, because he's convinced he's improving it. Isn't the one who believes
08:15they're doing good the most dangerous kind of enemy? Apocalypse believes he's the only being aware
08:21of this, and everyone else is children playing in a playground. And the worst part of all this is
08:27that evolution, as a process, is exactly as cruel as he describes it. If we look at pure biology,
08:34he isn't making anything up. Millions of years of life on Earth function more or less the way he says.
08:40For example, birds of prey lay two eggs, and when one hatches, it starts pecking and starving the
08:46smaller one, while its parents watch indifferently. All because nature knows resources are scarce,
08:52and only the strongest can leave offspring. When a lion takes over a pride, the first thing he does
08:59is kill the cubs of the previous leader to cut off his bloodline at the root, and in doing so,
09:05forces the females to mate with him. That's how cruel nature is. And let's not even talk about space.
09:11The cosmos is ultra-violent. But the problem with Apocalypse isn't the diagnosis he makes. It's the
09:18conclusion he reaches. Because he sees it's cruel, he becomes cruel too. He sees that evolution has no
09:25morality, and decides to throw morality away. Charles sees the same thing he does, knows the
09:31world is ruthless, but decides that precisely because of that, they must build a better future.
09:36But this villain isn't just a philosopher of pain. He's accompanied by his horsemen, the four horsemen of
09:42the apocalypse. War, famine, pestilence, and death. Four names obviously taken from the Bible.
09:49He doesn't have an army of robots or generic minions. He recruits broken mutants. He grabs
09:55tremendously powerful mutants, who are shattered inside. Traumatized, humiliated, desperate. And he
10:02puts his finger right into the wound. And there's no better example than Warren Worthington 3, Angel.
10:09Warren was one of the original X-Men. A rich, handsome guy with white-feathered wings,
10:14sprouting from his back. He was practically a real Angel. But one day, everything fell apart.
10:20During the mutant massacre, a villain named Harpoon drove his spears into his wings and pinned him to a
10:26tunnel wall. It was so severe that both wings had to be amputated. He fell into a terrible depression,
10:33and it all ends in a supposed accident where his plane explodes mid-air. But in reality,
10:40Apocalypse used the explosion to secretly rescue him from the ashes and take him to his ship. He
10:45offers him a deal in that devastating moment. When Warren was at his lowest, Apocalypse found the
10:52crack he was looking for. Warren accepts, and Apocalypse completely redesigns him. His skin turns
10:58blue, and instead of feathers, he gives him metal wings with razor-sharp blades capable of cutting
11:04through almost anything and firing their own feathers like projectiles. He immediately renames him Death,
11:12the leader of his horsemen. But none of this comes for free. He implants mental conditioning,
11:17and in the comics, also a drug, so that he obeys without question.
11:21When Angel reappears before his former X-Factor teammates transformed into Death,
11:27he uses the shock of seeing him alive to tear them apart. His friends didn't want to attack him,
11:33but he had no hesitation anymore. All this programming finally breaks when Iceman,
11:39one of his best friends, creates an ice decoy that Warren completely destroys, and seeing his friend's
11:45decapitated head believing he really murdered him. The psychological shock is so brutal that it
11:51shatters the mind control. It's precisely the same pain that Apocalypse used to enslave him that ends
11:57up freeing him. This is so powerful to me because it's this villain's entire M.O. Find someone strong
12:04but destroyed on the inside, and when he finds a crack, he slips in. The horsemen we already knew from
12:11the 90s cartoon. War, famine, pestilence. All were mutants Apocalypse picked up from the ground when they were
12:18down. He never recruits someone whole, always someone broken. And this brings me to X-Men 97 at the end
12:26of
12:26the first season. Apocalypse walks through the rubble of Genosha and picks up a burned card from the ground,
12:33Gambit's card. Think about everything we've analyzed. Apocalypse looks for the most broken,
12:39and who was more broken than Gambit? A guy who died sacrificing himself in the Genosha massacre,
12:45who left Rogue devastated, who carried the guilt of everything he couldn't prevent. Dead, broken,
12:52an open wound for the people who loved him. This is the perfect candidate. Take a corpse loaded with
12:58pain and guilt, and transform him into the next Horseman of Death, a hero that his own friends will
13:04have to face. And those who know Gambit already know what that means. But let's go back to the 90s
13:10for a
13:11moment. Apocalypse debuted in animation in 1993, in the classic X-Men series, the first time he ever
13:19appeared. And he showed up with that deep, imposing voice that sounded almost like it came from the
13:25depths of a grave. He appeared in the episode called Come the Apocalypse, where he hijacked the broadcast
13:32of a peace conference in Paris and announced to the world that he had arrived. At that point,
13:38the character had only been around for six years in the comics. His complete origin story, everything
13:44I just told you, hadn't been written yet. Rise of Apocalypse came out between 1996 and 1997,
13:52with the animated series already almost over. And even so, without the depth we'd see later. The
13:59character crushed it in the 90s series anyway. He got his own four-part arc, Beyond Good and Evil.
14:05There we learn that his power has a price, so devastating it consumes his own body.
14:11That's why he's immortal but not eternal. Every so often, he needs to renew himself,
14:16shed his essence to avoid dissolving. In the classic series, we see this with his Lazarus Chamber.
14:22But in Beyond Good and Evil, the character goes further. He operates from the axis of time,
14:28a place outside of reality, and ends up kidnapping the most powerful psychics in the universe to stop
14:34time and remake creation to his liking. The guy literally prefers rewriting the entire universe
14:40over dying. Now we jump 30 years ahead to the second season of X-Men 97, and here Apocalypse has
14:48evolved. He's no longer just a villain. He's the adversary who's ordering the timelines in which the X-Men are
14:54trapped. We've got mutants in ancient Egypt, just in time to watch up close how Insabanur becomes this
15:01colossus, and others in a devastated future where the guy reigns at the peak of his power.
15:08The writers finally give the character the origin story that the 90s series never told,
15:14because it didn't even exist back then, and they had no idea he'd become this popular. With this,
15:19the circle closes perfectly. So Apocalypse would be the only X-Men villain who wins even when he loses.
15:26Everything he preaches, that evolution is a savage process, that only the strong remains standing,
15:33that suffering forges you, is the same world the mutants live in. Feared, hated, hunted by sentinels,
15:39no longer living happily in Charles' mansion, but living in Apocalypse's desert every single day.
15:45His greatest triumph isn't conquering the world through force, but proving to Charles that his
15:52dream of peaceful coexistence is a childish fantasy. While Xavier preaches integration from the comfort
15:58of his mansion, the real world operates under Insabanur's rules – pure oppression, survival,
16:04and conflict. The X-Men spend their lives fighting for peace, but in doing so they are forced to become
16:10purely hardened, ruthless soldiers. At the end of the day, to survive human hatred, mutants have to
16:17adopt Apocalypse's doctrine. They become strong in order not to be crushed. And this, to me, is genuinely
16:24thought-provoking. Because this idea isn't an invention of superhero comics. The history of our
16:30own humanity is built on that same bloody selective foundation, empires falling, species going extinct,
16:37survivors adapting through pure violence. Apocalypse, in himself, wouldn't be a monster with delusions
16:44of grandeur. He'd simply be a metaphor for nature itself, a character who came to rip the mask off
16:50civilization and show us the savage world we walk through. If suffering is the only thing that makes
16:56us evolve, then peace isn't an achievement. It's a kind of anesthesia that weakens us. Could it be that at
17:03the end of the road, the old pharaoh was right? Or is this the most comfortable error we've ever told
17:10ourselves? And alongside this guy is another who was forged through suffering and follows a similar
17:16path, but with a different depth. Magneto. But that villain is for another video.
17:23Now I'd like to know what you think of this great character, what you think of Apocalypse,
17:28and if you enjoyed this analysis, don't forget to leave a like and subscribe to see more videos
17:33like this one. For my part, thank you so much for making it to the end, and I'll see you
17:39in the next one. Bye.
