Building Our (LGBTQ) Family - The Creation Of Us (S2:E3)

On a night out with their friends, Heather looked over at Christen and noticed she was detached and looked bored. “Are you kind of done with this?”, she asked. Christen then shared a realization. “I have done the party scene. We’re married now and I think I’m really ready to have a baby.” In that moment, they both decided it was time for them to start a family!
After some research and a few phone calls, the couple found a website called California Cryobank which Christen quickly nicknamed “Facebook For Third Party Sperm Donors”. They had a ball reviewing profiles and looking at baby pictures and ultimately chose their top 5 candidates. Next was a visit to an In Vitro Fertilization clinic to meet a specialist that helped them to understand the step by step process they would have to follow for Christen to become pregnant.
Heather and Christen still had to confront some old fashioned attitudes in the clinic when the staff realizes they were working with a married, gay couple. “It’s very strange when you have the capability of carrying a child but people are like ‘oh, your gay, oh OK, that’s great, and this is what we do’,” Christen explained. “It was kind of strange because it was almost like they were still treating me as a single, unmarried woman.”
Watch as they go through the highs and lows from the first attempt of IUI (intrauterine insemination) until they ultimately achieve success. There is a flood of excitement and anticipation when they tell their families but also a little nervousness for both Christen and Heather as they set off into the unknown on their road to becoming parents.
“I’m super, super excited, way more than I thought was possible. I’m the most scared really just to mess up”, Heather admits. ”I know there is no rulebook, mostly books that tell you what not to do. I’m just nervous to mess up but besides that I’m so excited, especially to meet the baby.”
