Baby Seal Ends Up on Car Dashboard

A baby seal appears at a lorry park.

Baby seals are surely adorable, but apparently some are very intelligent too. Recently a seal pup, named Smartie was rescued after wandering around a truck park at a ferry terminal in southwest Scotland. He climbed up a steep bank to get to the park, and when he was spotted, workers tried to get him back in the water.

However, the stubborn seal refused, so a ferry worker put him in the trunk of his car to keep safe - until Scottish SPCA officials arrived. Undeterred, the pup simply pushed the rear seat down and climbed up on the dash.

A Scottish SPCA official states “He is clearly a very smart seal as he ended up watching the storm out the windscreen of the car from his warm, dry spot on the dash.” Smartie was taken to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre, and it is hoped he will be returned to the wild in the near future.

Earlier this year, another adventurous seal ended up making an appearance at Drayton Lakes Reserve in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, which is roughly 50 miles away from the sea. Although seals occasionally venture away from the ocean, a nature reserve official stated "The surprising thing was to see it leaving the river and hopping over the bank, entering the gravel pits area."
