And Chinese security forces killed six Tibetans during two days of shooting. Tuesday’s violence was the latest in a series of confrontations since the Lunar New Year. Chinese forces opened fire and wounded many unarmed Tibetans.

Amid mounting tensions in China’s southwest Sichuan province, Chinese troops killed more Tibetans during a second day of shooting.

The UK-based group Free Tibet confirmed in a press release that two more Tibetans were shot dead on Tuesday in Serthar County.

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said that at least 32 Tibetans were wounded—12 seriously injured.

[Stephanie Brigden, Free Tibet Director]:
“They’ve used armed force against unarmed civilians…only today as we speak we are receiving information of more people being killed.”

The clash in Serthar County followed Monday’s protests in neighboring Draggo County.

Also on Monday, Chinese security forces fired tear gas at protesters in Aba County, known as Ngaba County to Tibetans.

In the UK, Brigden expressed concern and made appeals to the global community.

[Stephanie Brigden, Free Tibet Director]:
“The international community must unequivocally condemn these shootings and call on China to act with restraint as well as hold those who have opened fire to account. … It’s the largest shooting of Tibetan unarmed civilians since 2008.”

Already heightened by a series of 16 self-immolations starting last March, the latest incidents indicate that the crisis in Tibet is deepening and spreading.
