Since he was 14, Al-Amin has tapped gum arabic, the resin of an acacia tree that thrives in Sudan's conflict states, "manna" from heaven for some, a key ingredient in Coca-Cola for others. But the poor price he gets for it makes the 40-year-old farmer from North Kordofan consider cutting his trees down, selling the wood as charcoal and reluctantly contributing to the desertification of central Sudan, to feed his wife and seven children.
