Egyptian Odessa Stairs
Data recovery series, 2011.
6'54, b/w, videofilm

The famous Odessa Steps scene from the silent film Battleship Potemkin by Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein finally, in the year 2011 gets its sound. To the original image from the year 1925 audio was added. Sound were taken in January and February of 2011. from video clips placed daily on Facebook and YouTube by the activists of the Egyptian revolution .
While Eisenstein film uses a metaphorical language to speak about the beginnings of the October revolution Facebook recordings serve as a tactical medium for communication among the protesters themselves who were simultaneously acting at different locations. The Battleship Potemkin was made in the glory of the October revolution in the eight year of already established soviet government while the Facebook videos emerged at the time of the Egyptian revolution and were its key factor.
