00:00Here's the thing that bugs me about a crush.
00:01When I'm reading a book and I don't have a crush,
00:04I'm like, God, this book is great.
00:05And then when I'm reading a book and I do have a crush,
00:07I'm like, I wish he were here to see me reading this book.
00:16I wrote this song, Heat of the Summer, and I had a big crush.
00:20I found myself just having really nothing to do.
00:22And I thought, I don't like this person I've
00:26become in these two weeks where I have nothing to do,
00:28and I have a crush on this guy.
00:29I used to be so cool, and now I'm not anymore.
00:32I was like, I'm going to write about a crush,
00:34but I'm going to write about it from the perspective
00:36of being annoyed that I'm having one.
00:38So I'm crazy, that's usually not my thing.
00:44Bitch, I'm crazy, suspicious and insane.
00:48Can you blame me?
00:49Yeah, you made me this way.
00:52Now I'm in the trenches, fighting for my senses.
00:58I'm calling myself crazy.
01:00That's usually not my thing.
01:01I'm pretty analytical.
01:03I am an emotional person.
01:05I do act on feelings sometimes, but I would say I'm mostly thinking something through at least for a
01:10second before I send that text or get that double scoop or whatever.
01:15Stay up and I pace around, I pace around the room.
01:20Wake up and I'm thinking about, I'm thinking about you.
01:24Can't read or write or do what I like to do.
01:28I spend my days for 20 plays just thinking, what's he gonna do?
01:32That was true for me at the time.
01:35Up late at night, lamp lighting, no music on.
01:38He was often my first thought when I woke up and then there's the tone for the day.
01:42And he doesn't like you back.
01:44My life is a horror film.
02:03I don't always do this in my songs, but I just kept the melody of the first verse and
02:07did it for the second verse.
02:08I don't know.
02:08I just was grooving.
02:10But then I got that thing.
02:11It's like that illness, that disease, having a crush.
02:14And it changed me.
02:15Instead of thinking about Shakespeare or Robert De Niro or Martin Scorsese,
02:22I'm thinking about this guy and would he date me or not?
02:32The first one is more genuinely serious.
02:46Like, I think I look bad, so let me move that ring light just a little to the left.
02:51And then I think I look bad, so I take a hundred is more me thinking about how you'd think you'd
02:56take a hundred photos of yourself if you thought you looked really good.
02:58But I think the reality is you take a hundred photos of yourself if you think you look bad.
03:03Because if you got the shot, you got the shot.
03:05You know what I'm saying?
03:22If I like someone and he hasn't texted me back and I've got to take a shower,
03:27I always put my phone right on that counter.
03:29And I get in the shower and I do everything I need to do.
03:32And I'm also saying a prayer for the entirety of the shower that when I get out,
03:36there will be the text from him.
03:37Or it's not even that dramatic all the time.
03:39It's that I'm in the shower and I'm like,
03:41well, I can't look at my phone now, so maybe that's when he'll have texted me
03:46and I'll get out and there will be that text from him that's so underwhelming.
03:49That bridge is just a repeat of feelings that I've expressed throughout the song and I was
04:13sort of wishing that I could say something new there, but it just rolled off the tongue.
04:17And I was like, yeah, I'm tired. I don't want to keep thinking about this.
04:19And it was just sort of me winking at myself being like, I have not.
04:23Yeah, okay. It's all because of him. Cry me a river.
04:27But I do forgive you.
04:28As always, as I always do, because that's who I am.
04:31Now I'll listen to my playlists and pretend I'm you.
04:33Look at what I post and pretend I'm you.
04:35Aw, I'm sick and twisted and boring, but all I are so let me adore ya.
04:39I'm not what I used to be. And you don't want me, it's easy to see.
04:44And I'll move on eventually, but for now I'm taking pictures.
04:48I wrote up to basically the, but then I listen to my plays and pretend I'm you, that whole part.
04:53And I remember that just naturally flowing out of me and being like, that is too far.
04:58Should I shine a light on this thing that I think a lot of people do, which is look at their own
05:03Instagram profiles through the eyes of their crush? Or the playlist thing where I listen to music and
05:08pretend I'm in my crush's body and he's like, she's got good taste, but it's just true.
05:13I think the older I get, the less I do it, but I really did a lot in high school and college and yesterday.
05:19I'm taking thirst traps in the mirror in my room.
05:25I think I look bad, but it doesn't matter.
05:29I once read that some people's beauty can't be captured and he'll be sorry, happy ever after.
05:37I'm sure it was an Instagram quote.
05:40Some people's beauty moves.
05:41I saw that and I was like, makes sense to me now.
05:44Because I haven't always liked the way I look in pictures.
05:46I've spent most of my life seeing a photo of me and going, that's not what I look like.
05:50Instead of going, oh, I hate myself, sometimes I would, yes, have that feeling a little bit,
05:55but I had to always make it okay because it was every photo.
05:59And so I just started to tell myself, that's not what I look like.
06:02Then I saw that quote on Instagram about beauty moving.
06:05And I was like, oh, and that's also so poignant and true and completely about me.
06:10I just applied it to myself with great relief.
06:13The whole song's about taking thirst traps.
06:15And then at the end, the girl realizes she is beautiful.
06:18She just can't get a good selfie.
06:23This is such a fun song.
06:26It's weird that it ends on the down.
06:27I just was like, I want it to come back full force.
06:29So I told Ricky the next day, I was like, I want the song to come back full force.
06:33Without a moment of pause, he was like, sax solo.
06:35And I was like, okay.
06:37To me, it's like the valiant, gorgeous end that that song deserves,
06:42especially after the last line of it.
