Over the last 50 years, fishing techniques have become more and more productive. Other than species targeted by a fishery there are also accidental captures or "by-catch" which includes a long list of species caught unintentionally.
As a part of the sea turtle restauration plan in Franch Guiana, the WWF and the CRPMEM (French Guiana Regional Fisheries and Ocean Farming Commission), have carried out tests aiming to reduce the by-catch of local shrimp trawlers.
A new system developed in French Guiana has resulted in reduction of a large portion this unwanted by-catch : it is called the TTED.
