US Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday hailed the "extraordinary" progress made in Iraq, and said Baghdad set a democratic example for the region. At the Camp Liberty US base west of Baghdad, the Pentagon chief met with a company of some 200 US soldiers engaged in training the Iraqi army and police, and said what had been achieved in Iraq had come at a tremendous cost for US troops and the American people.
