A group of amateur space enthusiasts have sent a plane made only from paper and straw up into space to take pictures of Earth.

The popular means of silent communication between students at school was initially sent on its space mission as a joke.

It was a joke that cost the group £8,000.

British designers Steve Daniels, Lester Haines and John Oates built the plane after meeting over the internet on the site The Register.

The craft went 26,000m into the air before the helium weather balloon, to which the plane was attached, popped.

Speaking to the Metro, Mr Oates said: "I never thought we would find the plane at all. It could have ended up anywhere and I thought it would be smashed to pieces."
