Typhoon Fanapi Death Toll Rises to 55 in China

Floods, landslides, and heavy downpours brought by Typhoon Fanapi have killed 55 people in China's Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Another 42 still remain missing. Nearly 100 thousand people living in low-lying areas have been evacuated. These figures are from state media.
Some areas in Guangdong reported rainfall of over 25 inches within one day.
Floodwater and mudslides destroyed roads, power supplies, homes, and farmland. It's caused economic losses worth an estimated 300 million dollars.
Typhoon Fanapi, the most severe storm so far in 2010, wreaked havoc in Taiwan over the weekend before it made landfall on mainland China Monday.
Typhoons regularly hit China, Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan in the second half of the year, gathering strength from the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or South China Sea before weakening over land.
