Mother Teresa Remembered in Kolkata, India

Special prayers and floral tributes were offered at the grave of the Mother Teresa in Kolkata, on the occasion of her 13th death anniversary on Sunday.

Followers and admirers paid their homage at her tomb at the Missionaries of Charity in the city.

[Father Brian, Priest]:
"This afternoon there will be big mass at St. Xavier. But I wanted to come just to Mother's house and spend a few moments in silence and prayer, and also remembering, and also asking Mother's prayers, Mother's help in things of today."

Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. She was popularly known as the 'Saint of the Gutters' for her extraordinary love and dedication to the poor, homeless and diseased.

The Pope beatified Mother Teresa in October 2003, paving the way for her canonization.

Mother Teresa came to India in 1929 at the age of 18, took up teaching, became an Indian citizen in 1948, and lived in Kolkata.

She received several national and international awards for social service during her lifetime. They included the Bharat Ratna, the Magsaysay Award in 1962, the Pope John XXIII (23rd) Peace Prize in 1971, the John F. Kennedy International Award in 1971 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
