A strict curfew remains in force on Monday in several parts of Indian Kashmir, including the capital city of Srinagar.

Paramilitary and police forces have been deployed in large numbers to prevent further anti-India demonstrations.

"It's my appeal to people, asking them to renounce violence. The people who are governing this place, it's my appeal to them, please don't drag civilians into the realm of politics."

On the third day of the curfew, the roads were deserted, with paramilitary forces patrolling the streets of the capital.

The situation in the valley took a turn for the worse after locals went on a rampage, clashing with police on Sunday. Hundreds of protesters in Srinagar took to the streets. Shouting slogans, the rioters burned government buildings and devastated property.

One person was killed and several others injured after police opened fire to control the unruly crowd.

The Kashmir Valley has seen a surge of violence that has led the authorities to impose an on-and-off curfew in parts of Kashmir.

A curfew was initially imposed on June 30 in parts of northern and southern Kashmir to stop demonstrations over the killing of protesters. It was later lifted, but was reinstated as fresh violence erupted.

While locals say the protests are spontaneous, India has blamed separatists and Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based militant group, for instigating the latest violence.
