Curfew Continues in India's Restive Kashmir Region

Tension prevails in the Kashmir Valley after fresh incidents of violence. Authorities have tightened curfew measures imposed in provincial capital Srinagar.

India's restive Kashmir Valley remains tense Tuesday after authorities tightened curfew measures.

This comes in the wake of incidents of sporadic violence that have taken place across the region in recent months.

A heavy contingent of police and paramilitary troops were seen patrolling the deserted streets of Srinagar, after a brief relaxation in the weeklong curfew on Saturday.

Marketplaces were completely shut down and barbed wire fencing and barricades were erected, as army vehicles patrolled city streets.

The curfew call comes a day after a delegation led by India’s federal interior minister visited the region to assess the situation.

At least 100 people have been killed in the three-month-old protests, the biggest since an armed revolt against New Delhi's rule broke out in 1989.
