An estimated 19 million viewers suffered through England's disappointing finale to their World Cup campaign.

The 4-1 defeat at the hands of Germany screened by BBC1 drew an average audience of around 17.8 million.

The figure peaked at 19.5 million as Germany grabbed their third and fourth goals in a matter of minutes to extend their lead and kill off any lingering hope for England fans.

The average audience of 17.8 million was the second highest of England's tournament matches. The Algeria game, broadcast on ITV1 drew in 18.8 million viewers on average.

The draw against the US captivated 17.6 million before viewing figures slumped to 12.8 million for England's only World Cup win against Slovenia.

The figures mean the BBC drew eight out of ten TV viewers for its Match Of The Day programme. ITV1 picked up 600,000 viewers for an episode of Columbo and 800,000 for Agatha Christie's Poirot which were screened at the same time.
